Former NFL players tend to be FAR worse off financially than former f1 drivers though. Really kinda sad how the sport chews people up and spits them out with no safety net/guaranteed contracts.

Different forms of wear and tear. Much more frequent concussions, sprains, torn ligaments, occasional breaks. Far less shattered femurs and decapitations in American Football though.

That's a "devastating hit" :nono:

A big difference is diet. Guys in the NFL, even the "small" ones eat ridiculous amounts of food. Upwards of 10-15000 calories during training camp. Once they retire, it's tough to scale back down to their level of (in)activity.

That's probably really it, and plus they are geared for short acceleration bursts & maximum strength. Yeah, they are built like Mac trucks and will kill a F1 driver if you had them go one on one in a fight. But in the long-run, they are less healthy and more freakish in nature...they are a bit abnormal if you think about it.

Never mind pro athletes, I use to swim a km a day before I started working. 7 yrs later, I don't nearly exercise half as much as i use to, and I'm still having trouble cutting down my food consumption.

There should be a class in college on how to survive post pro careers, but then again pro athletes are the modern day gladiator who are only worth as much to their masters as when they are able. Once you're done, no one really gives a shit about you.

I feel that those position are mostly reserved for retired QBs and Coaches who have a better understand of the strategies in the game. You dont see many retired OL, DL or LBs on TV. Tedy Bruschi is the only I can think of, off the top of my head that got a TV gig.

I think the biggest disappointment in my education was the total lack of financial training. My parents are blue collar and have always just gotten by, so they havent been in the best position to teach me. Most of the kids at my school were the first generation to attend college in their families. In high school and college, not one mandatory class on personal finance. I had to ask or teach myself what APR is, why credit is important, why debt is bad, how to invest when you do make money, so on. I knew nothing... I would have spent SO MUCH less loan money than i did. Luckily, i was not one of the kids to bury myself in credit card debt as well. There really should be a mandatory freshman class on basic personal finance.

so the link to the NFL topic is the same, most of these athletes are their families first generation to come into serious money

Point is however, the entire retired football league can't get TV gigs...

I think football is one of the worse sports after playing the game. Terrible health conditions, multiple hits, possible brain damage and no financial training whatsoever.

not to mention relatively shit money...and even with a shitty contract, you're still one torn ligament away from your contract being null & void. A 2 sport athlete would be foolish to choose the NFL over the other sport.

Supply and demand really...1,696 NFL players, 750 MLB players, 360-450 NBA players.

We shouldn't feel bad for them imho...how many of us had the opportunity to get a free college education? If they lack the fore-site to take advantage of the unusually awesome opportunities life has presented them, how is that not the player's fault?

reminds me of a book, the one about the guy who goes to live with the gang members in chicago. the average chance of dying was HUGE like 20%/yr at the peak of crack, the average foot solider made less than minimum wage, and yet there was always someone else willing to get his spot in the gang. The perceived payout was so big (ie ballin' gansta) that they felt like the risk was worth it when really a minimum wage job at mcdonalds was much more beneficial on paper.

Book is Gang Member for a Day

Of all those guys I only recognize 3 names and didn't know any of them had TV gigs. I didn't even know OJ got a TV gig, thought he only got into movies.

but that being said, I think it's taken out of context. if you compare that to the number of QBs and Coaches that ended up on TV, what would the numbers look like? The percentages just are not in favor on personnel who are not QBs or coaches.

I think this was more true when we were kids...

Michael Irvin
Deon Sanders
Daryl Johnston
