Ecclestone: No room for FOTA in F1
By Jonathan Noble Thursday, July 8th 2010, 11:07 GMT
Bernie Ecclestone thinks there is no room in grand prix racing for the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) - as a spat over sponsorship branding in the sport moved up a gear at the British Grand Prix.
F1 teams had been warned ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix last month to be mindful of the display of sponsorship logos in the pits – with trackside advertiser Allsport making it clear that it owned such rights at circuits.
The matter has now moved across to the back of the pits too – with sources telling AUTOSPORT that teams have been ordered to remove their tractor units from the Silverstone paddock because of the branding that they displayed.
No truck tractor units have been left in the paddock, and teams were seen on Thursday trying to work out ways to make the front of their trailer units look better.
The move to clamp down on team rights comes on the back of comments that Ecclestone has made to Gazzetta dello Sport – suggesting that he does not believe teams' body FOTA has a place in F1.
"It will never work because it is made by teams that fight against each other on the tracks," Ecclestone told the Italian newspaper.
"When the teams examine rules, everyone tries to get an advantage. The teams wanted to divide F1, but now they understand that it is good to give importance to the money that they get (from FOM). There is no space for FOTA... "
Ecclestone has previously denied any involvement in the row over sponsorship branding, claiming it was a matter between the teams and Allsport.

The Hispania team has dropped Bruno Senna for the British Grand Prix weekend, in a surprise move on the eve of the event.
Test driver Sakon Yamamoto will race alongside Karun Chandhok instead.
HRT boss Colin Kolles confirmed to the BBC that the change would take place, but further details of the driver switch will not be released until Friday morning.
Kolles added that Yamamoto only had the drive for Silverstone at present.
"A decision as to who will drive for Hispania for the rest of the season will be taken over the weekend," he said.
Yamamoto's racing debut for Hispania will mark his first Formula 1 start since his stint with Spyker in the second half of 2007.

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has thrown fuel on the fire, saying if anyone has a right to cry conspiracy it's Sebastian Vettel.
Red Bull have once again been making headlines but for all the wrong reasons.
Despite winning the British GP last Sunday, the team was inundated with questions about their perceived favouritism towards Vettel after they handed the new specification front wing straight off team-mate Mark Webber's car.
Webber was furious with the team's decision and referred to himself as their "number two driver" when he took the chequered flag at Silverstone.
The team, though, has subsequently held clear-the-air talks, after which Webber conceded that perhaps he shouldn't have made that comment.
And one man who believes he definitely should not have, is Red Bull's advisor, Marko, the man who put the blame for Red Bull's Turkish GP shunt firmly on Webber's shoulders even though the entire world saw it differently.
"If Mark imagines there's a conspiracy between us and Vettel against him, then he is on the wrong track," Marko told Auto Moto und Sport.
"If I was Vettel then I would have suspected the opposite. Which car has permanently had something damaged?
"Did Mark have the defective spark plug in Bahrain, the loose wheel in Australia, the broken brake disc in Barcelona, the defective chassis in Monte Carlo, the transmission problems in Montreal and now the broken wing at Silverstone?"
But not content to end it there, Marko also believes Webber should be grateful to Red Bull, after all where was he two years ago.
"Mark is having a great season, and has also improved big time, but he should not forget that he owes much of this to the team.
"Where was he two years ago?
"Then he could not even dream of grand prix victories. Today, we have given him a car that he can win on his own."
The Austrian did, however, add that he doesn't care "who is champion, the main thing is that he is driving a Red Bull."

Kimi Raikkonen is reportedly set to commit to the World Rally Championship with Red Bull and Citroen confident he will resign for next season.
Raikkonen left Formula One at the end of 2009, however, rumours of his pending return have dogged the Finn since the start of the season. Most recently he has been linked to race-seats with Renault, Red Bull and even Mercedes GP.
The former World Champ, though, insists he's happy in rallying.
"I don't miss Formula 1 and I am enjoying what I am doing now," Raikkonen said at last weekend's Bulgarian round of the WRC.
"I have still not decided what I am doing next year yet. Soon I have to decide, maybe it will be just after Rally Finland."
However, his sponsors Red Bull are confident he will remain in the World Rally Championship next season.
"We are very happy with what Kimi has done this season," a Red Bull source told Autosport. "He is very good for the Red Bull brand and we are looking to extend his agreement into next year. I think this is likely."
Added to that, Citroen Racing director Olivier Quesnel believes it's only a matter of time before Raikkonen signs up for next season.
"I'm sure this will happen," he said. "For myself, he is really involved in rallying and he wants to succeed. I will be pleased if he will stay. he has done one year and he needs to do one more year to make sure."

That being said, I think it's time for everyone to STFU and for the RBR drivers to stop taking each other out of races.

I do see Marko's point that Vettel has definitely had the worse mechanical luck, but hasn't gone around moaning about/insulting the team over it.
That being said, I think it's time for everyone to STFU and for the RBR drivers to stop taking each other out of races.
He's the only talking shit that makes it worse. I can understand if Vettel or Webber talks shit b/c they're the ones highly charged and driving the cars ultimately... but Marko? He's like that uncle you're afraid to introduce your SO to b/c he's going to say something stupid to embarass you.
