I never use to post much on F1 crew back on OT, but now I don't even visit OT anymore. I wonder how long it'll be before they delete my account.

Hey man, for that, I'm going to drink some chilled Grey Goose. Sure I might be using it as an excuse to drink, but meh... Kimi would do it...

After much speculation, Ferrari's radical new nose cone was finally unveiled today during testing at the Barcelona circuit.

As Felipe Massa tested the F2008 on Bridgestone's slick tyres, the car was fitted with a slotted nose cone.

This 'hole in the nose' is aimed at making use of the high-pressure air that builds up between the front wing and the underside of the nose.

This would improve the car's downforce by sending a better airflow to the rear wing.

What Ferrari have done is to create a channel inside the nose cone that takes this high-pressure region and vents it over the top of the chassis.

From overhead shots the hole's outlet can be seen, with one large exit split into two. This probably helps the exit flow merge with the flow already passing over the car.

Ferrari were testing an array of pitot tubes in front of the engine's inlet snorkel. These sensors would have picked up the differing air speed going into and over the airbox.

This set-up would give Ferrari a comparative reading for the new nose's effect.

If the test goes well, Ferrari are expected to give the new nose its race debut in Spain in two weeks' time.

Massa finished the day over 2.5 seconds ahead of his closest rival.

That big blank spot on the livery makes perfect sense now...not for looks, but because they were gonna add aero there after a few races

looking at those pictures, it looks like it's split between the nose cone and the actual body of the car....
wonder what the bottom looks like...

I loved the old Hockenheim. It was such an awesome horsepower track.

Once, in the 90s, the first few laps had the cars going "Noah's Ark-style" through the forest based on their HP output.

IIRC, it was Williams-Renaults leading, then McLaren-Hondas, Ligier-Renaults(!), then came the Ferrari V12s, followed by the Benetton-Ford V8s.

*sigh*

I remember the 1992 race - Williams-Renault, McLaren-Honda, Ferrari, Benetton-Ford, Lotus-Ford, Ligier-Renault, Footwork-Mugen, not in that order but it made for some rather bizarre viewing!

I read a LOT of fourms (10+ different ones daily, all automotive related), but mainly (as in daily)only post here and OT, others I post on only a few times a week.

I'm still a regular on OT as I still find it a chuckle. Despite objections, the sub has worked in the Off-Topic forum from the sense there is better conversation at the moment.

But the F1 Crew thread has died.

I'm hoping the increased contact patch on the surface will help overtaking, or at least letting the driver able to follow another car a bit closer....

Somehow they need to get the rules to make the cars more reliant on mechanical grip and less reliant on aerodynamics.
