Former steward withdraws Dennis slurs
Tuesday, 13 January 2009 17:16
McLaren boss Ron Dennis says he has been “totally vindicated†after a former steward who worked on his private jet dropped all allegations against him at a Southampton employment tribunal.
Peter Boland worked on Dennis’s aeroplane for five years before being sacked in May 2007 and claimed unfair dismissal and discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation.
At the tribunal Boland falsely accused Dennis of being “insensitive†to Arab business associates and once saying he had to wash his hands because he had been “shaking hands with Arabs all dayâ€.
Boland also falsely claimed he was sacked after unfounded rumours that he was homosexual were circulated among staff.
Dennis strenuously denied the allegations against him when he gave evidence at the tribunal on Monday and said his former employee’s claims were “ridiculous†and had damaged his reputation.
On Tuesday Boland told the hearing that he was withdrawing his action after making “unfounded allegations†and apologised unreservedly to Dennis.
Speaking after the tribunal, Dennis said in a statement: “Clearly, I and all at McLaren, and all the other respondents, have been totally vindicated by the complete and unequivocal withdrawal and unreserved apology by Peter Boland, who had worked as a steward on my aeroplane between 2002 and 2007.
“This case has been hurtful, irritating and unnecessary, in the sense that no impropriety ever took place, which fact Mr Boland now concedes.
“Equally, Mr Boland accepts that I have never said or done anything either racist or homophobic.
“Moreover, every action taken by my colleagues and me in connection with Mr Boland's dismissal was done with the intention of minimising the negative impact of that dismissal on his reputation and employment record.
“Had he not embarked on this unsuccessful and injudicious legal action, which he has anyway now abandoned, those goals could have been achieved.â€
In a statement which he read out at the tribunal Boland had said: “I have decided to withdraw my action against Mr Dennis and all respondents in the case.
“I unreservedly apologise to Mr Dennis and all respondents, and to the Southampton Employment Tribunal, for wasting their time with what I now realise were unfounded allegations.
“In particular, I apologise to Mr Dennis for suggesting that he is, or was, either racist or homophobic, or that he ever made any remarks or performed any actions that would suggest that he was.
“I feel great remorse for the upset that I now realise I have needlessly caused to him, to his family and to his colleagues.
“Lastly, I will return the car, which was the subject of county court proceedings.
“I consider this matter now closed and will not be taking further action, or making further comments, in connection with it in the future."

Ferrari say they have no concerns about rivalry between Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen boiling over to damage their hopes of fighting for the world championship this season.
Raikkonen is determined to make amends for his disappointing 2008 campaign this year, having upped his training over the winter and lost some weight, and that could make for an intense time alongside the ever-improving Massa.
With fresh memories of the way Massa lost out on the world title last year by just one point, there is a clear risk of two fully competitive drivers taking points off each other.
However, Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali says the team are sure there will be no difficulties in handling two men at the top of their game as they bid to take on expected rivals McLaren, BMW-Sauber and Renault.
"Last year we didn't lose a single point due to mismanagement by our drivers," said Domenicali at Ferrari's ski camp media event at Madonna di Campiglio on Wednesday,
"The team works for both drivers and if we can give them a competitive car - as we hope we do - we won't have any psychological pressure from inside."
Domenicali says he has no doubts that Massa has now matured into a serious title contender on the back of the progress he made as a driver last year. And it means embarrassing errors, like his spins in Australia and Malaysia, are now a thing of the past.
"I've met a very fresh and motivated Felipe Massa," said Domenicali. "He matured a lot over the last season. His strong point over these years was that he always believed in himself.
“I think he's mentally ready and mature enough to manage the pressure, from inside and outside."
Domenicali also believes that Raikkonen is fired up to return to form in 2009.
“Kimi can't wait to get back into the car and he'll have the possibility at Portimao,“ continued Domenicali. “He wants to show that he's himself again, after President Montezemolo's joke, that it was his twin brother driving by the end of the season.
“Kimi has and always had an enormous capacity: knowing how to detach himself. This allows him not to feel any pressure from outside."
Domenicali reiterated his comments from the launch of the team's new F60 at Mugello on Monday that he was predicting a tough championship because of the new regulations.
“We must remain with the feet on the ground, because it will be a very difficult championship,†he said. “Looking ahead will also be required from our partners, especially from Marlboro, with whom we're sharing a common project.
“It will be fundamental to be immediately competitive and to invest in reliability and in simulation, which is very useful, because the results can also be used in the road car production."
Looking further to the future, Domenicali would not be drawn on renewed speculation that Fernando Alonso has signed an option with the team for 2011.
"I think it's difficult to add anything else to what has been said as far as this issue is concerned,†he said. “Our drivers have signed contracts, even if President Montezemolo has said 'wait and see'. Fernando is a great driver, but we're extremely happy with the drivers we have."

Ferrari's world champion of 2007 Kimi Raikkonen is an 'unbelievable' character, team boss Stefano Domenicali said on Wednesday.
At the traditional 'Wrooom' ski and media event in the Italian Dolomites, Domenicali was asked about the famous personality of the team's reticent Finnish driver, who carries the nickname 'Iceman' on his helmet.
"Kimi lives in another world; on another planet," he is quoted as saying by the German news agency SID.
Domenicali's point is reinforced by an anecdote of the Italian press following the launch of the new F60 earlier this week.
According to colleagues who attended the Mugello roll-out of the 2009 car, while drivers Felipe Massa, Michael Schumacher, Luca Badoer and Marc Gene conversed in the paddock, 29-year-old Raikkonen was asleep in a car in the carpark.
"Kimi isolates himself," Domenicali confirmed.
"If he feels pressure, then it's only because he has put it on himself."
"Nothing that is coming from the outside affects him at all - and that is unbelievable," he said.
Domenicali said he would never expect Raikkonen to emerge from the winter break and 'has suddenly learned Italian', or is 'suddenly smiling'.
"That is not the way he is," the Italian explained. "But he is completely impatient to drive and win races again."

we had a tradeshow last summer in San Diego, and normally they have nightly dinners and stuff, I declined to go on one of them...
instead, i went to the beach, took a boat ride, had a nice dinner at some super cozy mexican place...
while they went to some fish place that no one liked... I said others could come with me, but since I didn't have anything "planned" and was going to wing it instead they'd prefer to go to a known place...
