CAMPOS'S FUTURE IN DOUBT WITH TALK OF SALE
Monday 11th January 2010
Campos Meta's future in F1 looks to be on shaky ground with news that the team could sell up before even completing in a single grand prix.
In recent weeks, the team's place on the 2010 grid has been thrown into doubt with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone questioning whether they will even make the grid at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.
The team, though, is confident they will be on the grid but are seriously seeking a financial boost, which could come through the sale of the F1 team.
"It is not a secret that we do not have the budget - and time is scarce," a team insider told German website motorsport-total.com.
"If we can find a good investor, we could sell part of the team to them. If necessary, we could sell the whole team, but the basic conditions would have to be right."
A1GP boss Tony Teixeira has been linked to a possible buy-in after his failed attempts to purchase Spyker and more recently Honda.
However, Campos is reportedly not the only new team in trouble.
According to claims in Sunday's Gazzetta dello Sport, USF1 have applied to the FIA for special dispensation to miss the first few fly away races of the season. The team reportedly want instead to start their campaign at April's Spanish GP

USF1 co-founder Peter Windsor continues to stress that the under-fire American newcomer will be on the grid for the start of the F1 2010 campaign - but speculation similarly continues to suggest otherwise...
USF1 has dismissed speculation that it will not be ready for the beginning of the F1 2010 campaign in Sakhir in just over two months' time and that it has petitioned the sport's governing body to be able to miss the opening four races and instead come in for the start of the European season in Spain.
All sorts of rumours have been flying round about USF1 for months, with many sceptical about just how co-founders Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson will make the venture work, given that it has its headquarters the other side of the Atlantic in the heart of NASCAR country in Charlotte, North Carolina – and traditionally, the majority of F1 success stories have been based in Europe.
There is also the fact that it is the only entry in the field to have no drivers yet signed for 2010 – with the mantra having changed from an initial desire to run two homegrown talents to a brace of experienced hands to now just about anyone the team can get, with Windsor having all-but admitted in a recent interview that an all-rookie, all pay-driving line-up is likely for the outfit's maiden campaign at the highest level [see separate story – click here].
Moreover, there have been precious few signs of progress on the design front, and the series of comedy sketches published right here on Crash.net [click here] have to an exaggerated degree tended to sum up what the paddock view is of the most precarious of the F1 2010 newcomers.
Now, authoritative Italian newspaper La Gazzetta Sportiva is reporting that USF1 has applied to the FIA for special dispensation to skip the early flyaway races in Bahrain, Australia, Malaysia and China and belatedly join the fray for the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona in early May.
Windsor, however, insisted in an interview with the official F1 website that 'I can't say any more than that we will definitely be on the Bahrain grid', and team sources have since reinforced that conviction.
To further add weight to Windsor's argument, USF1 has recruited respected ALMS and IndyCar figure John Anderson as team manager [see separate story – click here], whilst the nose section of its Cosworth-powered challenger is said to have 'performed well' when subjected to crash tests in the UK last week.

Lewis: I blew Alonso away in my rookie year
Sunday 10th January 2010
Lewis Hamilton has upped the ante ahead of the 2010 Formula One season by claiming he "blew" Fernando Alonso away during his debut season in 2007.
Hamilton came agonisingly close to winning the World Championship in his rookie year - losing out by just one point to Kimi Raikkonen after he could only finish seventh in the final race of the season. His then team-mate, double World Champion Alonso, finished on the same number of points but was third by virtue of having less podium finishes than the Brit.
Although it was "sickening" to lose the Championship in that fashion, Hamilton says he got a lot of satisfaction from beating team-mate Alonso.
"I definitely didn't blame myself for the year that I missed out," he said during an interview with McLaren team sponsor Johnnie Walker. "It was my first season in Formula 1, alongside a World Champion - a double World Champion - and I blew him away. I beat him.
"No-one has ever come into their first year and been at the front, let alone beat a World Champion, beat the mentality and the strength that he would have had and his experience in Formula 1 already up to that point.
"I'm very proud of the whole experience of leading the World Championship for most of the year, and it's sickening, for sure, to think we lost it in the last couple of races.
"There's no answer I can possibly come up with except for fate. I was leading and needed a couple of points in the last two races. I barely got one. The worst two races of the whole year. In one I went off, the second one the car stopped and it never stopped on me before. It was a growing experienced and made me who I am today."

Jan.11 (GMM) Takuma Sato has emerged as a leading candidate to be Robert Kubica's Renault teammate in 2010, according to Auto Hebdo.
The French publication said the Japanese veteran, to turn 33 later this month, is effectively vying for the seat with Nick Heidfeld.
New team boss Eric Boullier is believed to have compiled a shortlist featuring three other names, including the Gravity Sport-managed Ho-Pin Tung and Jerome d'Ambrosio, and the Frenchman Romain Grosjean.
Prior to the signing of Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen, Sato - who completed the last of his 93 grands prix prior to Super Aguri's collapse in mid-2008 - was also linked with the new Lotus team.
"We haven't given up," his agent Matthew Winter said last month. "There are still a few seats open and we are trying to hunt them down.
"His options are running out so we don't know if he is going to be in F1 next year."
Jan.11 (GMM) Pedro de la Rosa will be confirmed imminently as Kamui Kobayashi's Sauber teammate for 2010.
The Swiss newspaper Blick, whose F1 correspondent Roger Benoit is close to the Hinwil based team's founder and boss Peter Sauber, said an announcement could be made this week.
Spain's Diario AS also said long-time McLaren test driver de la Rosa, 38, has now agreed a race deal with Sauber, with an announcement due "in a matter of hours", or a few "days" at the most.
It is believed the contract is for 2010, with an option to include an additional season. De la Rosa's main opponent for the seat was believed to have been Ferrari reserve driver Giancarlo Fisichella.
The sports newspaper also said Sauber has secured two new sponsors, including Universia, a subsidiary of the Spanish bank Santander that was recently expected to depart Renault along with Fernando Alonso.
