Of course it doesn't add to the racing, but we all watch on television, making it a visual sport. The sparks added an element of excitement, something you didn't find in other forms of racing.
I wish the powers that be would understand the visual impact of the sport. Same reason you (and I) want to see less horns & winglets - less ugly, more sleekness.
Remember those few races at the A1-Ring (nee Osterreichring) in Austria? The mountain forests made for such a strong and majestic visual. But sadly we don't get that anymore, just boring sand.
And ohmygod can you imagine sparks at the night race? wackit x 11ty.

Hopefully the new regulations actcually encourage the teams to focus on reducing drag instead of trying to claw back the lost downforce with doo-dads, only then will the cars look sleek again.the '08 BMW really takes the crown for ugly with bullwinkle + viking. i remember always seeing the new ferrari and being blown away by how beautiful the car was, the F2002 is probably the last f1 car that made me feel that way...

The appearance of Ferrari's radical new nose innovation at the Barcelona test on Monday confirmed that espionage could still be a factor at the Italian team.
Alleged Ferrari spy Nigel Stepney no longer works for the Maranello based team, but the technical secret about the 'hole nose' nonetheless emerged in the pages of an Italian magazine some ten weeks ago.
Autosprint broke the story about the nose, including sketches of the innovation, in its pages in February, raising suspicions that the leaking of confidential and sensitive design data has not stopped, notwithstanding Stepney's firing and McLaren's $100m fine.
According to the Swiss newspaper Blick, Technical Director Aldo Costa was 'horrified' about the leak, confiding that 'very few' Ferrari workers even knew about the nose solutions when they were being tested in the wind tunnel.
Blick claims that an internal investigation into the leak is in progress.

I'm sure we'd all love seeing close nose-to-tail racing too.
