how so? the conditional entry states that there is no 2-tier system and that the FIA accepts FOTA's proposal that was announced yesterday. if the FIA don't accept the proposal then the teams aren't entered into the world championship. basically they all filed today so they don't get penalty fees for signing in late, and keep the door open to leave if the FIA decides they don't want to play ball. no harm no foul IMO.

Max will interpret this as a sign of weakness...a week ago they weren't entering, now they're entering with conditions, next week they'll just be entered.

I'd would have honestly liked to have seen this turn into a bigger pissing contest. Anything that happens to lessen Max's (and more importantly Bernie's) power is good for the sport...even if the sport has to take a year off and change it's name.

It makes it seem like all these multi-million/billion dollar companies can't throw their weight around compared to the FIA.

Wurz set to lead Superfund into F1

By Simon Strang Sunday, May 31st 2009, 15:00 GMT

Alex WurzFormer Formula 1 driver Alex Wurz has lodged an entry in the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship with a new start-up operation called Team Superfund, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

The former Williams, McLaren and Benetton racer, will become team principal of the new outfit, which is set to be funded by Austrian business tycoon Christian Baha - the founder and owner of the investment company Superfund. The team's cars will be powered by the standard-specification Cosworth engine.

Superfund joins Prodrive, Lola, Campos Meta1 and Team US F1 as one of several new ventures seeking to enter the sport following the FIA's plan to introduce budget caps to F1 for 2010.

AUTOSPORT understands that Superfund has been in serious discussions with the FIA already, that planning for the project is at an advanced stage, and that it has been in contact with key personnel. The team is waiting until it has secured its entry before it begins acquiring assets and staff however.

Superfund is also understood to be awaiting the outcome of talks between the governing body and the Formula One Teams' Association over proposals for existing teams to assist new outfits before it decides on how to structure the operation.

It is believed that Wurz would prefer to align the team with an existing constructor based in the UK, perhaps renting space, facilities and staff from its factory, while Superfund takes time to build-up its own headquarters, possibly based on existing resources in Austria. This would also give the new team an opportunity to gain essential experience from existing expertise.

It is understood however that finances are already in place for Superfund to create a team from the ground up if necessary.

Baha, who is known to be a huge motorsport fan, has sponsored F1 teams and junior series in the past and came close to setting up a Superfund category of his own earlier in the decade.

Wurz retired from Formula 1 racing at the end of 2007 with Williams, though he spent last year as test and reserve driver for Honda and has stayed on the team's roster since it became Brawn.

The 34-year-old Austrian is expected to continue racing for Peugeot in sportscars and will compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours next month.

Vettel drives Toro Rosso to pick up Bandini trophy

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel journeyed to Italy on Sunday to receive the Lorenzo Bandini Trophy in recognition of his outstanding performances last year with Toro Rosso. The award is given annually by the Italian village of Brisighella, in memory of local driver Bandini, who was killed at the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix.

During his first full Formula One season, Vettel clinched a stunning wet-weather victory at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix and finished eighth in the championship standings with 35 points.

Rather than being driven to the event, Vettel chose to drive himself, getting behind the wheel of the Toro Rosso Formula One car for the 12-kilometre journey from the Italian team’s factory in Faenza to Brisighella. With the roads remaining open, Vettel enjoyed the unusual experience of weaving in and out of normal traffic, with his police escort

The prospects of a Grand Prix on Roman city streets has taken another step forwards.

Following speculation that the Italian capital is hoping to organise a Formula One race, it emerges that the sport's Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone is also serious about the project.

London's Evening Standard reports that the 78-year-old billionaire last month applied for a pan-European trademark to the name 'Formula One Gran Premio di Roma'.

It is suggested the event, slated for the city's modern EUR district, could be added to the 2011 calendar.

The Gran Premio di Roma title was last used in 1991, when Alex Zanardi won the formula 3000 race at Vallelunga.
Previously, dating back to the 50s and 60s, the race ran to Formula 2 rules.

In 1954 and 1963 F1 cars contested the Rome Grand Prix, but the event was not included on the world championship calendar.

gawd damn it...
no more street races

Much advertised racing car hoax
by Keith Collantine

Jackie Stewart and Ken Tyrrell used March chassis in 1970

March is the latest outfit to reveal it has lodged a bid to compete in F1 in 2010.

The team has not been seen in Formula 1 since it optimistically sent two chassis to Kyalami for the 1993 South African Grand Prix, despite not being able to pay for a supply of engines.

That brought to an end the F1 involvement of a team whose origins lie with the man who is agitating for a surge of new entries to Formula 1 - Max Mosley.

In 1970 Mosley joined Graham Coaker, Robin Herd and Alan Rees in contributing £2,500 each to get the team started.

At the season opener at Kyalami - scene of the final act in the team’s F1 history 33 years later - no fewer than five March chassis were present. One-fifth of the 25-strong entry.

The Tyrrell-entered March of world champion Jackie Stewart started from pole position and finished third. Chris Amon, in a March entered by the team that built it, started alongside Stewart on the front row having set an identical lap time in qualifying (to within one tenth of a second).

Stewart won the second race of the year at Jarama - underlining the promise of the new constructor. This is all somewhat ironic given the bitter enmity between Stewart and Mosley today.

However the team was also noteworthy for its chronic lack of funds, from which it acquired the sobriquet ‘Much Advertised Racing Car Hoax’. (March actually stood for Mosley, Alan Rees, Coaker and Herd.)

Then as now

The parallels between the state of Formula 1 in 1970 and the changes Mosley is advocating for 2010 are startling.

An abundance of relatively cheap Ford-Cosworth DFV engines made possible the existence of new teams like March and Surtees and, one year earlier, Frank Williams Racing Cars. Today it is Cosworth who, at the FIA’s behest, are standing by to provide cheap engines for any teams that need them in 2010.

Just as today, the new teams were derided by Ferrari, who railed against the ‘garagiste’ entries with their off-the-shelf engines, gearboxes and chassis.

Mosley sold his stake in March in 1977. Today it seems his sights are fixed on re-creating in 2010 the conditions that allowed March to enter five cars with comparatively little funds four decades earlier.

Will Mosley’s budget cap allow the like of March, Prodrive, Lola, Superfund, USF1, Litespeed, Epsilon Euskadi and Campos Meta1 to enter F1 in 2010?

Or will we find ourselves talking about another Much Advertised Racing Car Hoax?

so that's Brabham, March, Lola, USGP, Campos, Prodrive, Litespeed, Superfund for new teams...

so basically a whole new series :wackit:

I bet at least 3 of those teams decide to back out of f1 before the '10 season starts.

March, Campos and Litespeed would be my top picks for dropouts.

In fact the only one of that list that I'm confident will race in '10 is USGP.

wouldn't that be a bitch and freaking awesome all at the same time...

the 9 F1 teams that lodged their entry with the "conditions" attached are considered invalid entries, Williams with the above teams are accepted, everyone drops out except for Williams and USGP...

wonder what would happen next

Max & Bernie would sue the former constructors into participating in F1 again.
