Maybe Bernie was onto something, but with the wrong approach when he was mentioning the shortcuts.

Here's a solution though up by a write in PlanetF1

Tour de France style round about

FORMULA ONE'S NEW CHICANE?
Thursday 14th January 2010

PlanetF1 can unveil the new PF1 Tour de France chicane that could revolutionise dull processional motorsport races, where cars follow each other for lap after lap.

Observant readers to this website will know that PlanetF1 feature writer Frank Hopkinson has long been a fan of the Tour de France, in particular the mighty Lance Armstrong and the Manx Missile Mark Cavendish.

One of the features that caught Frankie boy's eye in previous tours is the way riders take roundabouts on the run-in to stage finishes. The fantastic aerial camera footage of the race shows the peloton splitting and going both sides of many roundabouts and rejoining on the far side.

"What if this were applied to F1?" he thought. It would certainly break up processional races and banish the Trulli Trains forever.

Bernie Ecclestone has revealed today that he himself has been thinking up even more radical proposals to improve the GP show - starting with a controversial plan to introduce "shortcuts" at grand prix tracks that each driver could use for a limited number of times per race.

Talking to Autosport the F1 supremo said: "I think it would be very easy for us on each circuit to have an area where you could gain a bit of time so you could overtake - a shortcut if you like - which a driver could use five times during the race, so it would stop people getting stuck behind somebody," he suggested.

"It's good for TV, good for the TV commentators, they could talk about somebody having three [shortcuts] left and somebody else having two and what's going to happen and so on."

The problem with Bernie's scheme - apart from offending the purists - is that everyone would need to use the shortcut on the opening laps of the race, because that's when you can make up the most places.

Frank admits that his solution is also not for the purists. "It may be a bit Scalextric but quite frankly I'm sick and tired of staring at dull processional F1 races. If F1 is going to reclaim the Xbox and PlayStation generation then it needs to shake things up and this is one of the ways to do it without spending a load of money redesigning the cars."

The PlanetF1 staffer's solution is like a dual chicane where you can take either route and each is the same distance, with the same entry and exit angle. There is a blend line that starts before the braking zone for the chicane. This acts like the pitlane exit line that drivers cannot cross, drivers will incur a penalty if they cross the blend line either before the chicane or after it.

In effect the line is there to stop cars weaving at the last minute, but there could be a certain amount of kidology about which side drivers are going to choose before they get to the line. In effect it broadens the racing line to the width of the track as cars approach the chicane.

"There could be a lot of faking and feinting - like Mansell and Piquet going down the Hangar Straight into Stowe in 1987. Or two drivers might try one side and a third driver, behind them both, could sweep past on the other. It's all to play for."

It'll be interesting to hear what Bernie has to say.

Fuck it, let's just put Nitro on all the cars, do shortcuts through buildings, and have literal knockout elimination where the last car standing is the pole sitter.

Technically only 1 team is without an official signed driver (only need 1 driver to conduct a test weekend anyways).

definitely not any of the ferrari test drivers

and bernies idea of a shortcut is just retarded... you don't need a chicane to get more passing, you need drivers like koby, kimi, and alonso to do crazy passes, and stop pussy footing around and bitching when racing gets close (see trulli at interlagos, photo evidence... really? man up and pull a pass fucker)

Team US F1 has promised an innovative approach for the design of its first Formula 1 car, as the Charlotte-based operation edges closer its first test with the 2010 challenger.

The outfit has spent almost one year working on the new car and one of its chief designers, Scott Bennett, has revealed that the team will not simply be following the pack.

"I'm extremely fortunate in that I've been able to do most of the car's layout from day one - I've seen and had a hand in almost every step of its evolution," he wrote on the Team US F1's official website.

"Primarily I've been responsible for the front and rear suspension, particularly packaging. This has been a huge challenge. F1 cars are small, and we are fitting a lot of stuff into a very tight volume.

"And we're doing a few things quite differently than they have been done in recent years. I can't give specifics (yet), but we've looked at everything with a fresh perspective, and come up with some different answers.

"We'll know whether they were the right or wrong answers soon enough, but our car certainly won't be a clone of anything else out there. And did you know that we're the only one of the four new teams designing our own gearbox?"

Bennett is overjoyed at the opportunity he has got to help work on US F1's first car, with only a few weeks now before the machine hits the track for the first time.

"In less than a year we've built a very capable shop, put together the smartest and most talented group of people I've ever had the privilege of working with, and designed what should be a fast, reliable, safe, drivable, and yes, beautiful car," he said.

"This team means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, but for me it's literally a dream come true. When those lights go out at the start of our first race, it will be both the end of a long road, and the start of a new one. I can't wait."

it would be interesting if they came out swinging like Brawn...

Makes sense, honestly. Lewis is going to be able to give more solid feedback on the car as compared to last year's car, and better direct devlopment.

Sucks for Button though that after 3 days he's going to have half the track time as Lewis. And with Pedro leaving, i just see that gap growing over the testing days.

For the team, and car development, it makes the most sense. The testing is too limited to throw away days with a driver that's not used to the car, especially in the opening of testing. Button got caught out by Pedro's leaving, but I don't really see any other real option for the team. Has any other McLaren tester even driven the car in the last few years?

Schumacher will be champion - Brawn

By Jonathan Noble Monday, January 18th 2010, 13:02 GMT

Ross Brawn has tipped Michael Schumacher to become this year's world champion on his return to Formula 1 action.

Although Schumacher will be the oldest driver in the field and has not raced in F1 since the end of 2006, Brawn thinks that the seven-time champion will confound his critics and come out on top.

"If I had to bet on any of them then it is clear that Michael will become world champion," Brawn has been quoted as saying by the German newspaper Bild.

"Michael is now more relaxed. When he retired in 2006, F1 was a burden for him. Now I can sense his old enthusiasm."

Brawn does think, however, that it may take a little bit of time for Schumacher to get fully up to speed - which may not happen in time for the first race of the season.

"I do not think he will come out and win the first grand prix. He will need a few races to familiarise himself with the other cars and the many new drivers. Then I hope to see the old Schumacher," added Brawn.

"This has always been his strength anyway: to learn and adapt amazingly quickly."

Good strategy and driver equality are usually mutually exclusive. Just don't go around bragging about how equal your team is when it's anything but.

i was close though...
but at 38, it's a tad late to be jumping into the game though... i mean shummi and rubens have been F1 race drivers for like 15 years, and i know pedro has been behind the wheel basically just as long, but test driver to full time race seat is not exactly the same thing.

i'm not the biggest fan of quick nick, but he should've got a seat, any seat really, way before PdR...
