I wouldn't rule out Renualt just yet... 0.2 behind the McLaren
Pedro talks too much for being a test driver...

 He's already proved himself the buffoon with williams being almost 1.5 seconds slower than beleaguered and pathetic renault.

they're not. just a test driver that talks to much is taking test times from the first official 2009 spec car test not knowing the program the teams are running and already making assumptions :hs:

Not sure about the boom fade, but in genereal there seems to be an increased appreciation for music that's a bit cheesy

Think of the Journey revival.

MADRID -- An American team will be racing in Formula One next year, and IndyCar driver Danica Patrick is a candidate to fill one of the seats.

USF1, which will be unveiled Feb. 24, will have a staff of at least 100, a working budget of $64 million and an aim to put two American drivers on the starting grid. The team is looking at several candidates, including the 26-year-old Patrick.

"She's great. She gets a lot of press," USF1 technical director Ken Anderson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "[Indianapolis Motor Speedway president] Tony George would probably be pretty mad with me if I took her out of the IRL but we'll see.

"I don't know if it's something she wants to do. We'd certainly love to test her and go from there."

NASCAR driver Scott Speed, who raced 28 times for F1 team Toro Rosso from 2006-07, is also a candidate.

Conor Daly -- son of former F1 driver Derek Daly -- and Josef Newgarden are also being mentioned, with both drivers presently competing in European junior categories.

The team will be based in Charlotte, N.C., and with much of the technology coming from the United States it means "there are a lot of companies we can lean on to outsource," according to Anderson.

Calls by the AP to motor racing's governing body Sunday to confirm that USF1's entry had been accepted were not returned.

The team is currently looking for a secondary base in Europe, most likely sharing with Epsilon Euskadi's team headquarters in northern Spain.

"We're talking to [F1 engineer] Sergio Rinland about basing it at Espselon. It's a beautiful city, it's certainly on top of our list," said Anderson, who worked as a designer and engineer in F1 and IndyCar. "Spain makes a lot of sense with all the winter testing."

Epsilon Euskadi is active in Le Mans and there is a wind tunnel there that meets FIA standards.

Getting back into F1 was a no-brainer for Anderson.

"It's the biggest sport in the world and the biggest TV show in the world," he said. "NASCAR has just become a national sport, never mind an international sport."

With the global economic downturn, more independent teams are possible, especially since FIA president Max Mosley stepped in to reign in the costs with sweeping regulation changes and cost-cutting coming into effect to avoid any other teams from pulling out.

Honda's exit in December is no surprise to Anderson since the Japanese manufacturer's core business interests lay elsewhere.

"Mosley had to step in and stop F1 from killing itself with the manufacturers throwing ungodly money and people and resources at it. It's got to get back to a real business like Frank Williams owns Williams, Ron Dennis owns McLaren, Eddie Jordan owns Jordan and they all had to show a profit at the end of the year and, therefore, had to make intelligent decisions.

"One little hiccup like this and it's all sort of imploded."

The drop in costs has "leveled the playing field" although Anderson is targeting points to start.

Pete Windsor, a former team manager at Ferrari and Williams, will partner Anderson and run the competition side of the team.

Anderson remains a throwback to the late 80s and early 90s of F1 when he worked at Williams, Ligier and Onyx.

"In '92, the Williams was the coolest car ever with active suspension, [anti-brake system], that was kind of the peak of technology and their budget for that was less than 30 million pounds," Anderson said. "I missed the days when we could do some crazy things."

When they get off the ground, they need a promo video like Toyota's this year - but a montage with The Boss singing Born in the USA

Newey ready to rethink future in F1

By Jonathan Noble and Edd Straw Friday, February 13th 2009, 10:27 GMT

Adrian NeweyFamed car designer Adrian Newey has admitted that Formula One's increasingly restrictive technical regulations are forcing him to ponder whether he remains in the sport for much longer.

Newey could be on the verge of one of his most successful seasons for years, with his new RB5 having shone in early testing, but he has conceded that he is already evaluating an F1 exit in the next few years.

Although excited about the raft of regulation changes that were introduced for this year, Newey feels that the challenge will be less in future seasons because the rules are now so tight.

Speaking exclusively to this week's Autosport, Newey said: "I would definitely like to step back in the not-too-distance future. The rules are becoming more and more restrictive.

"While it has been exciting to have such a big regulation change for this year, ultimately those regulations are more restrictive than the one's we've just come away from."

Newey has said if he chooses to pursue opportunities elsewhere, he would still like to retain some links with F1.

"Maybe I'd still be involved as a consultant, but that would have to be on the terms of the team," he said. "It has to be that the engineers at the team would want me to be a consultant, otherwise it just wouldn't work."

Newey added that "within two or three years it will definitely" be time to look elsewhere.

The feelings about restrictive regulations in F1 have been echoed by FIA president Max Mosley, who believes that it has been a mistake to make the sport's rules so tight.
"It's a fault with the regulations," explained Mosley. "They have constricted the areas where they can work to keep speeds and costs under control to the point where you get the best returns by endlessly refining every single component of the car." He added: "People like (Colin) Chapman, (John) Cooper or (Keith) Duckworth would be lost in modern F1. We have this culture of minimal innovation and endless refinement."

I think he may be talking about the fact that cost cutting simply won't work. People will take the littlest advantage and just refine, refine, refine. He put the rules in to appease the teams (and keep his competition going) but I think it was more against what he wanted F1 to go. I'm not sure what goes on inside Max Mosley's head, and before anyone says Nazi orgies - I've already gone there.

The Dutch bank ING on Monday announced that it will end its Formula One sponsorship activities at the end of 2009.

It was already clear that Renault's embattled title sponsor was reviewing the F1 programme - which also includes trackside advertising and naming sponsorship of Grand Prix - because of the global financial crisis.

The Dutch government recently moved to safeguard ING Group, who had posted a second consecutive multi-billion dollar quarterly loss and decided to cut F1 spending by 40 percent this year.

The three-year title sponsorship of Renault was due to expire at the end of this year.
A statement said ING has decided ‘not to renew’ the deal and therefore will ‘end its presence in F1’ beyond 2009.

"ING has enjoyed the relationship with Renault F1 and will continue to work closely with the team during the final year of the partnership," the statement added.

no surprise there...

Renault chief Flavio Briatore is confident his team have a 'solid future' in Formula One despite the impact of losing title sponsor ING at the end of this year.

With Renault having already been surrounded by widespread speculation about their future in the sport because of the increasingly gloomy financial outlook for car makers, the team's situation has not been helped by ING's decision to end its involvement in F1.

However, Briatore remains upbeat that, with F1 embracing a number of cost-cutting measures, he can look to the future with confidence.

"During the past three years, the team and ING have enjoyed a rewarding and successful relationship," Briatore said in a statement on his team's official website.

"ING has been an enthusiastic and supportive partner for the Renault F1 team in all respects. They have been a true success story and have become a brand that is recognised worldwide thanks to an innovative and proactive sponsorship programme with our team and Formula One.

"However, we have been aware for quite some time that the world's current financial climate was calling for a restructuring of our sport and with FOTA we have moved in that direction.

"Drastic cost reductions have been on FOTA's agenda as one of the first priorities and with the ongoing programme of measures we are confident we can guarantee a solid future for our team and for Formula One."

but Renault seems to be safe regardless

If this USF1 team is for real, I will pick up and move to Charlotte immediately. I will beg, borrow or steal some form of employment with them, I don't care if it's sweeping the floors for free! I want to be a part of F1 that badly. God I'm a loser, LOL. :x:

Problem is, money > talent in racing these days :wtc:

She brings a lot of money to the table where's other male drivers wouldn't command half her sponsorship with 2x the talent. But I'm TOTALLY in for Danica trying to start a fight with Kimi :wtc: That would be EPIC! :x:

Speed. :x:

Have you ever approached a rural railroad crossing, one that might be out in the middle of a farmer’s field? There’s nothing impeding your vision for miles either way. Off in the distance you see the glow of a million candlepower headed your way as the lights of a train are quickly getting closer and closer

That's probably the best way to describe Sunday's crash between championship contenders Scott Speed and Ricky Stenhouse during Sunday's ARCA RE/MAX Series Hantz Group 200 at Toledo Speedway you could see it coming a mile away.

The race was barely 30 laps old when Stenhouse shoved Speed down the backstretch and into the turn three wall. Speed's No. 2 Red Bull Toyota was heavily damaged with the right front tire shaking and the rear end no longer straight. Yet Speed's crew quickly went to work replacing the tires and pulling the fenders out. After losing just one lap on pit road Speed was back on the track.

Once the green waved it was painfully obvious Speed didn't have the pace to run the rest of the day. But that wasn't his plan.

The first time the lead pack caught Speed was coming out of turn four to complete lap 34. Speed gave plenty of room as his Eddie Sharp Racing teammate Justin Lofton passed to the outside. When Stenhouse followed by a second later Speed's car darted sharply right, getting the No. 99 AflacLife.com Ford out of shape.

It was a warning shot.

Moments later as Stenhouse slowed to enter turn one Speed barreled into the back bumper at full speed, hitting Stenhouse in the left rear and sending him into a wild spin. Stenhouse backed hard into the turn one wall with the driver's side while Speed went slamming into the turn one wall at virtually full speed. He glanced off and crossed the track before nosing into the inside wall.

The entertainment didn't stop there for those watching at home.

SPEED's cameras were on the spot as soon as Speed got out of his wrecked car and he told America what they just witnessed was a payback.

"He was on my bumper and he pushed me flat out into the wall," Speed told The Speed Channel. "The car was completely undriveable. I couldn't do anything with it. He started it. He ain't going to win the championship with that attitude. That's ridiculous. That was the most blatant thing I have ever seen in my life."
