Holy shit, Stefan GP is a who's who of disgraced F1 employees

Bernie Ecclestone is backing Stefan GP to get a grid spot this season, and sees Ralf Schumacher as an ideal candidate to head its driver line up.

The Serbian team, owned by millionaire Zoran Stefanovic, is currently operating out of Toyota's old factory in Cologne, after striking a deal to take over development of the ex-F1 team's 2010 chassis and engine. It has already said it will test at the end of February and that it intends to send equipment to the first race in Bahrain to prove its credentials as a viable F1 outfit.

Now Ecclestone has thrown his support behind Stefan GP and believes it could replace any team that fails to make the opening race.

"I do not believe in the participation of US F1 and Campos," he told German publication Sport Bild. "Instead, I have good contact with Stefan and am trying to get this team a starting place. Ralf Schumacher would be an ideal driver for them. He has experience, he knows the team."

Schumacher hasn't competed in F1 since he left Toyota in 2007, but showed an interest in making a comeback around the same time as his brother Michael said he would return last year. Ex-Williams and Toyota-backed driver Kazuki Nakajima is expected to test for Stefan GP at the Portimao circuit in the Algarve in late February and is likely to be a strong candidate for a drive if the team is allowed to race.

Former-McLaren designer and Spygate plotter Mike Coughlan is on the technical staff and it is believed that long-time McLaren team manager and Liegate conspirator Dave Ryan and ex-Midland, Spyker and Force India team prinicipal Colin Kolles are also involved with the team.

They just need to get Flavio and Symonds on board, with Piquet and JPM driving, for the sweep. :o And let's not forget the fact that Toyota was originally accused of cheating, being the original team to have copies of Ferrari data. :x

why JPM? he's a whiney bitch but he never cheated... did he?

edit: and I'm not sure he qualifies as a disgrace to F1, he's just sucks. I think even JV is more of a disgrace to F1, especially as he is a one hit wonder. Who sold out for the money.

Yea, i suppose so.

I just keep thinking of when JPM beeched his car on the kerb just before he quit. That's pretty much a disgrace. :o

The virtual F1 car
Claire Furnell February 1, 2010

You can test your skills on one of the most life-like race simulators © Sutton Images
With testing in Formula One now strictly limited, much of the preparation for the new season is done behind the wheel of multi-million pound simulators. A computer game so advanced that it can actually replicate every movement of the car, the only snag is it costs £125,000.

These state-of-the-art machines are not only used to develop driver skills but also allow the engineers to achieve the perfect set-up. The simulator can run full race distances, allowing the teams to tweak every tiny variable.

Most of us mere mortals have to settle for arcade or home computer games to feed our need for speed. The trouble is they simply don't get close to a real race experience. But now there are is new breed of simulators, although still too expensive for home use, can offer the ultimate race experience. You can feel the wheel vibrate as you try and ride the curbs, the G-forces as you brake, and the back end slip away as you accelerate too quickly out of a corner.

To show just how good this simulator is, when I arrived at Pure Tech Racing to try their latest simulator I had to wait my turn. A string of GP2 Series drivers were pitting their wits against the technology. Sam Bird, who races in GP2 for the ART team, took a break to tell me why he likes the new set-up.

"It is actually very close to the GP2 car I drive," he explained. "We are here in this hall and it honestly feel like you are out at Jarama driving a real car. You get the G-forces with this machine, because of the moving platform you get the feeling that you are on track.

"It handles like a proper single-seater should do. If you brake too hard you lock-up, if you go into a corner too hard you get understeer. If you're too aggressive on the throttle on the exit it's quite easy to spin. But the platform is excellent as you can actually feel what the car is doing and adjust your driving accordingly. So you can actually make a mistake and correct it, whereas without the moving platform you can actually get a bit of oversteer, not know about it, keep your foot buried and all of a sudden you are spinning down the straight. "

The wrap around screens put you at the heart of the action © Sutton Images
Although drivers like Bird might use simulators like this to prepare for racing, there are a lot of members of the public who would love to have a go. Luckily, if you are prepared to travel to Gatwick you could have just that opportunity.

Pure Tech Racing's centre manager Nick Dunn explaines: "What we are doing at our new centre is setting up ten of these simulators for the public to enjoy. We know there are lots of frustrated racing drivers out there who have never had the chance to really go racing.

"The BRD06 simulator has been built from the ground up to bring all aspects of the motorsport world to the general public. Within the software we have also got the ability to change the set up of the car from an engineering perspective. It allows the guys to change the handling of the car just like you would at the race track - We are trying to make it as realistic as we can.

"We think it's great that the GP2 boys are enjoying the simulator as much. It's really important to us that we can validate the system. So these guys' reactions are absolutely vital."

So if you have always fancied yourself as the next Michael Schumacher, you can try your skills for around £20 a session at the centre which is due to open in the spring. Be warned, though, it is not as easy as the experts make it look.

Heidfeld to be Mercedes reserve driver

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, February 4th 2010, 10:43 GMT

Nick Heidfeld is to be the test and reserve driver for Mercedes GP this year, after failing to find a race seat on the grid for 2010.

The German, who left BMW Sauber at the end of last season, had been linked with a drive at Mercedes GP before Michael Schumacher's comeback was confirmed.

After losing out on that seat, Heidfeld was believed to have been in talks with Renault and Lotus for a seat in 2010 - but has now accepted a testing role instead.

Speaking about his move, Heidfeld said: "I am very pleased to be joining the Mercedes GP Petronas Formula 1 Team. It's the team which has attracted the most interest in the close season, not only because of the comeback of Michael Schumacher, but also because this season sees the return of the Silver Arrows cars as a Mercedes-Benz works team for the first time in over 50 years.

"While I would of course have preferred a seat as an active driver, I am really proud to be part of the new Silver Arrows team. I have seen how committed everyone at the team is and I feel the same. I will be doing my very best to support Michael and Nico this year."

Heidfeld will renew his working relationship with Mercedes-Benz, who helped support him as far back as 1997 when he was a junior driver for the German car manufacturer and won the German F3 championship.

His first experience of F1 machinery came at the wheel of a McLaren-Mercedes F1, with whom he became test driver for the 1998 and 1999 season.

Heidfeld's appointment at Mercedes GP means the team now has three German drivers on board - with Schumacher racing alongside Nico Rosberg.

The poll only takes into account the results from the last 12 months (curently 3/09 - 2/10). In those results you take:
(Wins, Fastest Laps, Pole Positions, Laps led, etc.) * Series multiplier * (Race importance / Total races in season for series)

Obviously a win is weighted higher than a pole, higher than fastest lap, etc..

Yes we do. So glad USF1 didn't try her out. Maybe NASCAR will be her niche, as she isn't too competitive in Indy. I watched a bit of Speedtv's stream, and it was all Danica. Not even commentary. Pissed me off.

Her race almost came to an early end when she got hit by Nelson Piquet while trying to overtake him on the inside along the frontstretch as they battled among the top-15.
