If it is it would be nice b/c teams can cut down on costs by getting away from wind tunnels. Bravo to VR for trying it...
Teams have used CFD for years. If the wind tunnel correlated exactly what the CFD data did, they'd have cut out wind tunnel testing years ago.

true... but maybe computer horse power in the past hasn't been powerful enough to give results in a quick enough manner....
I know some of my animations here at work sometimes have to be toned down because my computer isn't fast enough to crunch the data... some of my frames in animations might take 30 minutes to render, and when i have to do 1000+ frames, i simply don't have the time to sit around and watch progress bars for 2 - 3 weeks... by the next time i get a new system, i can probably have that down to maybe 3-4 minutes a frame, and then it might be a possibility for a future project...
for example, this past christmas holiday, i needed to render out 20 seconds worth of animation in HD... so roughly 600 frames, but 5 different times, so total of 3000 frames. I did a test run the weekend before our holiday break... from friday night till monday morning, it rendered about 170 frames... there was no way i could do 3000 frames in a weeks time, so i had to change my project some... wasn't as pretty but it was accomplished...
and trust me, working with fluid dynamics and projects with millions of points or reference/data/location... it takes time...

By the same token of 'if it worked' theory: i'm sure the F1 teams have invested in the top CFD software/hardware to stay current. Especially with the new limitations on physical testing.true... but maybe computer horse power in the past hasn't been powerful enough to give results in a quick enough manner....

money invested in driver simulators instead?

The best moment of the test was when Alonso was closing in on Jenson Button on the track. There were a couple of laps when they were nose-to-tail with each other and I think Ferrari wanted to see the pace of the F10 running in turbulent air behind another car. What was interesting though, was that the McLaren was pulling away down the straights and Alonso was catching him through the corners, so in terms of power and torque Mercedes appears to have the advantage. But you could see the Ferrari was quicker overall, of course you don't know what fuel loads and set ups they were using,
interesting...

Virgin FW fell off a while ago and they dont seem to be coming out again...9 seconds off the pace
12:20 Virgin says it will be unable to run anymore today

I guess they forgot to integrate their CFD package with the FEA package on the structures side.Testing happening atm, Alonso doing a race sim and going pretty fast

things you don't see every day
They were using those gadget to measure airflow...
it appears they used paint on the car the day before they brought out the airflow gauges.

Where are you guys following testing this year? I haven't been able to find much on these tests, no pics etc...
I have most of the high res pictures released so far, probably a gigs worth....
I posted some in the car launches thread, but for the most part, they all look exactly the same, if you're seen one set of pictures or remember last year... nothing really has changed for constant updates, i only really post the ones that stand out from the average (ie: mclarens wind measurements/renaults wing/etc)
autosport.com has a pretty good updates post during the tests for on track action and times...
