Is FOTA toying with us now? What's the deal with the breakaway series?

I can understand that the FIA would want to put out conflicting stories to confuse everyone, but why hasn't the FOTA issued an official statement that the breakaway series is ON, no if's buts or whatever's.

I hope they don't take us for a ride on this one. I'm sooooo set on a breakaway series, and hope that Max and Bernie die old, single, hookerless and penniless.

Mosley ready to run for re-election

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, June 23rd 2009, 11:38 GMT

Max MosleyA defiant Max Mosley has told the FIA that he now has no option but to consider standing once again as president, in light of what he sees as an 'unjustified' attack on the governing body by Formula 1 teams and manufacturers.

Ahead of what is being viewed as a key meeting of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council in Paris on Wednesday, where the governing body is expected to react to plans by F1 teams to create a breakaway series, Mosley has made it clear that he will not be forced to walk away by the wishes of teams.

In a letter that Mosley sent to all FIA member clubs on Tuesday, he insisted that it was entirely up to the members of the governing body to decide if it wants him to continue to help stave off the threat posed by teams.

"Over recent weeks it has become increasingly clear that one of the objectives of the dissident teams is that I should resign as president of the FIA. Last year you offered me your confidence and, as I wrote to you on May 16, 2008, it was my intention not to seek re-election in October this year," wrote Mosley in the letter, a copy of which has been seen by AUTOSPORT.

"However, in light of the attack on the mandate you have entrusted to me, I must now reflect on whether my original decision not to stand for re-election was indeed the right one.

"It is for the FIA membership, and the FIA membership alone, to decide on its democratically elected leadership, not the motor industry and still less the individuals the industry employs to run its Formula 1 teams."

Mosley has told the member clubs that he views the breakaway plans and recent comments from the European car industry association ACEA calling for a change of governance in F1, as an assault on the FIA's authority.

"This is an attack on the FIA's right to regulate its Formula 1 World Championship but, worse, it is a wholly unjustified criticism of and direct challenge to the entire structure and purpose of the FIA," added Mosley.

"No president of the FIA could allow this to go unanswered...we are also preparing legal proceedings in case these are needed to protect the FIA's rights in its Championship and to discourage any dissident Formula 1 team from engaging in illegal acts."

Mosley has also cast doubts on whether the parent board of the manufacturers involved in the breakaway will be happy to offer financial support to a new series.

"The catalyst for the current dispute was the FIA's attempts to reduce costs in Formula 1. A reduction in costs is essential if the independent teams are to survive.

"Without the independent teams, the championship would depend entirely on the car manufacturers who, of course, have always come and gone as it suited them.

"It is extraordinary that at a time when all five manufacturers involved are in great financial difficulty and relying on taxpayers money, their Formula 1 teams should threaten a breakaway series in order to avoid reducing their Formula 1 costs.

"It remains to be seen whether the boards of the parent companies will allow precious resources to be wasted in this way."

F1 breakaway schedule leaked

Eurosport - Tue, 23 Jun 11:57:00 2009

A blueprint calendar for the Formula One Teams' Association's new breakaway series in 2010 has been leaked - with no fewer than 10 current or recent grand prix circuits listed amongst the 17 venues.
2008 Monaco GP Monte Carlo - 0

* Bernie will fight for F1 future
* Webber to have leg surgery

FOTA are at loggerheads with FIA president Max Mosley over regulations for the 2010 season, and the appearance of a schedule for the new series undermines Mosley's claim that the teams are merely "posturing" and that a resolution to the dispute is "very, very close."

Current F1 venues Monaco, Silverstone, Monza, Abu Dhabi and Singapore are all on the list of venues, while the recently discarded Imola, Montreal, Indianapolis, Magny-Cours and Suzuka are part of the draft plan.

There is also a mooted return to Jerez, the southern Spanish track that fell out of favour with F1 when the town's mayor appeared on the podium and presented a trophy that should have been given out by a dignitary from Daimler-Benz.

There is also a potential return to Adelaide, the popular home of Australian Grand Prix until 1996, when rival Melbourne took over.

"Not surprisingly Adelaide has been included because it was very, very popular when it had Formula 1," said racing consultant Mike Drewer.

"But it's a bit like trying to work out who might be the members of a cabinet if there was a change in government."

There is no race in Brazil, but Argentina and Mexico are both on the list.

In Europe, meanwhile, there is the addition of the state-of-the-art Portimao track in Portugal, which opened in 2008 and has hosted testing as well as World Superbike races.

Surfers' Paradise - which has hosted Champ Cars, IndyCars and V8s - has been nominated as a reserve venue should any of the others not be up to the grade.

F1 commercial rights-holder Ecclestone has poured cold water on the FOTA plans, claiming dissenting teams do not possess sufficient financial backing to organise their own championship.

Provisional FOTA 2010 schedule:

March 3 - Buenos Aires, Argentina - Last hosted F1 in 1998

March21 - Mexico City, Mexico - Last hosted F1 in 1992

April 11 - Jerez, Spain - Last hosted F1 in 1997

April 25 - Portimao, Portugal - Never hosted F1

May23 - Monte Carlo, Monaco - Current F1 host

June 6 - Montreal, Canada - Last hosted F1 in 2008

June 13 - Indianapolis, United States - Last hosted F1 in 2007

July 1 - Silverstone, United Kingdom - Current F1 host

July 25 - Magny-Cours, France - Last hosted F1 in 2008

August 15 - Laustizring, Germany - Never hosted F1

August 29 - Helsinki, Finland - Never hosted F1

September 12 - Monza, Italy - Current F1 host

September 26 - Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Current F1 host

October 10 - Marina Bay, Singapore - Current F1 host

October 24 - Suzuka, Japan - Last hosted F1 in 2006

The FIA WMSC is meeting tomorrow in Paris, Mosley and company will be there, as well as Luca from Ferrari, I think a lot of things are waiting on the outcome of that meeting...

FOTA has a meeting scheduled for Thursday as well...

Well, most current venues are losing money with having to pay bernie so much $$$, I imagine they'd be jumping at the opportunity to host a race with as much potential interest but without the Bernie's racketeering.

What other costs would be incurred right now...just hiring IMS to try and go broker a few TV deals...but you could pay them with an ownership taste. I don't think they're going to have any real costs until they start promoting this thing.

These are major racing teams backed by major automotive companies and major sponsors.

I'm quite sure that Toyota alone could fund the breakaway series with one year's worth of budget. :o

Also Adelaide sucks dogs bollocks - the overtaking possibilities at that circuit are next to none.
