Stefan GP cancels Portimao test

By Jonathan Noble
Monday, February 22nd 2010, 17:35 GMT

Stefan GP has abandoned plans to test at Portimao in Portugal this week after failing to secure a supply of tyres to run on, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

The Serbian-based team has its new car, the Toyota-based Stefan 01, all ready to hit the track following a fire-up in Cologne last week, but its failure to obtain tyres from Formula 1's official tyre supplier Bridgestone has scuppered its bid to begin testing.

Bridgestone is only contracted to supply F1 tyres to those outfits that have an entry to the world championship, and the Japanese tyre manufacturer was unable to provide alternative GP2 rubber at such short notice.

With Stefan GP boss Zoran Stefanovic unwilling to run the car on tyres that are not suited to F1 performance, he has decided to call off this week's planned run.

"We cannot do the test at the moment and we are still trying to find a solution," Stefanovic told AUTOSPORT. "We have no tyres and will not test on tyres that are not suitable for the car to go testing at full speed.

"We now need to see what our options are, but we definitely need to do something to sort this situation out."

Stefan GP will almost certainly not be able to get hold of F1-spec tyres unless it gets an entry to the 2010 championship - something it has been pushing for for several months now.

Although there are now serious doubts about the future of Team US F1, which has asked to miss the first races of the season, Stefanovic has said that he is still no nearer understanding where his outfit stands.

"We are expecting that the situation will be clarified soon," he said. "Everybody knows that some teams are facing certain problems, and we are looking to clarify this situation."

Stefanovic also hoped to be able to confirm his team's drivers in the next week.

"We have already agreed terms with [Kazuki] Nakajima, and we expect to conclude a deal with [Jacques] Villeneuve. We think it is a good decision for us, and it makes sense for him."

2 shitty drivers in a ready to race team is still better than 2 shitty drivers in a team that wont make it on the grid :o

More cars isn't necessarily better, considering both will most likely spend all their time at the back. I'd rather have a field of 18 competitive cars than 30 deadbeats

Question is would you rather 18 competitive cars AND 8 'deadbeats'?

Realistically though these guys are slower but unless they aren't making 107% I'd say let em race. Nobody seemed to care that the Minardi was slow as shit (2-3s a lap off pace), but we've been spoiled by the fact that the last few years the competition has been extremely close together (whole grid split by 1-2s).

Something that has always bugged me about racing is that it all works by sponsorships. Why do we even have a GP2 ladder league when drivers aren't all being pulled from there by some of these up-start teams. But walk in with a big sponsor portfolio, and you have a drive. I mean, really...what's the point?

'Deadbeats' can change. Look at Force India at Spa.

I'd rather have more teams so that when the big corps pull out (as they have been), we're not left with a race series of 5 cars. I already saw one 05 USGP.

I hate mentioning Louise as an example, but dude didn't come in with any sponsorship, no rich connected parents. True, he had the macca connection, but that was because of talent over the years, not wallet size.

GP2 seems like a good proving ground for the guys that can't buy a seat.

This.

Although you're probably not going to even get to GP2 without some sort of backing, at least it's a path for the talented to come up and prove their worth.

Mosley has never made me laugh until now...

But I do wish Ferrari and Mosley would stop this bitching, considering their war of words over the last few seasons is what's turning millions away from F1 as it is. Mosley is gone, isn't it time for Ferrari to move on too instead of behaving like attention whoring drama queens?

MOSLEY: FERRARI LIKE A JEALOUS MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN
Thursday 25th February 2010

It doesn't look like the war of words between Max Mosley and Ferrari will end anytime soon after the retired FIA president described the Italian outfit as a "middle-aged woman who is jealous of the attention new beautiful women around her are getting".

Ferrari re-ignated the tit-for-tat spat earlier this week by claiming the continued struggles of USF1 and Campos Meta were the result of "the legacy of the holy war waged by Mosley".

F1 commentator and journalist James Allen was among a handful of writes who met with the 69-year-old on Wedesday and discussed the issue with him.

According to James Allen on F1, Mosley 'found the whole thing quite amusing but hinted that the team had opened a can of worms here and that he had not planned to say anything rude about them before now, but that they have fired the first shot with this attack. He described Ferrari as a middle-aged woman who is jealous of the attention new beautiful women around her are getting! He also said that the comments about Lotus and Virgin 'limping' into F1 and implying the new teams are a shambles, was rich given that Ferrari sent one of their cars out of the pits with a fuel hose attached in Singapore 2008.'

Ferrari's attack was largely aimed at the FIA's decision to accept the likes of USF1 and Campos despite their battle to secure enough funds to make the grid. A third team, Stefan GP, were labelled "Serbian Vultures".

Mosley believes USF1 and Campos might well merge, but fears Stefan GP won't make it onto the grid as Ferrari won't agree to their participation.

'On the subject of the new teams he is pleased that there is new blood in F1 and regrets the problems of USF1 and Campos,' James Allen on F1 continued. 'At the time of the assessment of new entries he insists that both places were visited regularly and financial checks carries out by Deloitte and by CVC's finance experts. As for what happens next, he thinks there will be a merger between USF1 and Campos.

'This would leave an open 13th entry, but he reminded us that for Stefan GP to get it, all the teams need to agree. I know for a fact, speaking to Ferrari this week, that they will not agree to that, as long as disgraced former McLaren designer Mike Coughlan is working for the team.'

So now there is a chance Bruno Senna's seat at Campos is under risk due to insufficient funding, and that Jose Maria Lopez may replace him? WTF does the kid have to do to get a break here? Sure Senna wasn't a GP2 champion, but Lopez hasn't raced an open-wheel since '06...
