Former Ferrari team principal Jean Todt has confirmed that he will stand for the presidency of the FIA later this year.
Just 24 hours after outgoing president Max Mosley endorsed Todt as the ideal candidate to replace him, the Frenchman has confirmed that he does intend to put himself forward for election.
He is the second candidate to put himself forward, with former world rally champion Ari Vatanen having announced his campaign last week.
Speaking about his decision to stand and revealing the key figures behind his bid, Todt said: "Following the decision of Max Mosley not to seek a further term of office and his unequivocal support of my candidacy, I have written to the FIA membership to inform them that I wish to stand for the presidency of the FIA.
"It is my intention to continue and expand the outstanding work of President Mosley, who for 16 years has worked tirelessly to strengthen the FIA's major motorsport championships and to position the FIA as the voice of the motoring public, actively promoting safe, clean and affordable mobility for all.
"Given the unique structure of the FIA and its twin roles in sport and mobility it takes more than a president to run the organisation and I am delighted to announce my leadership team.
"For the position of deputy president for mobility I would propose Brian Gibbons, chief executive of the New Zealand Automobile Association; for deputy president for sport I would propose, Graham Stoker, chairman of the Council of the UK's Motor Sports Association; and for president of the Senate I would propose Nick Craw, president of ACCUS and the current FIA deputy president (sport).
"I am confident that together we will offer the FIA the opportunity to elect a dynamic leadership team of outstanding experience and commitment. "
Mosley revealed his preference for Todt as the man to replace him in a letter to FIA member clubs on Wednesday, confirming that he was going to step down when his current term expires in October.
"Jean is unquestionably the outstanding motorsport manager of his generation and arguably of any generation," wrote Mosley.
"If he agrees to stand, I think he would be the ideal person to continue but also to extend the work of the past 16 years. He can be relied on in all areas where the FIA is active. I very much hope you will give him your support."
Todt's bid to stand as FIA president is likely to generate controversy in F1 - coming just weeks after teams suggested that they would prefer an 'independent' candidate who did not have any previous links to teams.
Furthermore there have been times throughout his Ferrari tenure, particularly during the numerous team orders controversies involving Michael Schumacher, that Todt earned fierce criticism from fans and media for putting his team ahead of the sport.
I like Jean Todt, he's like the cool old man that you want as an uncle or something...
and as much as I've love to see him head the FIA... that whole ferrari tie in doesn't sit right with me...

Agree...I'd prefer no link. Wonder if this affects FOTA at all.

One would assume it would make ferrari that much less likely to leave.Agree...I'd prefer no link. Wonder if this affects FOTA at all.
But if we think of it another way, one problem is solved. The only other remaining problem is Bernie.

It could be seen as a unification of FOTA & FIA w/ the Ferrari link. Or it can be seen as FOTA weakened b/c now FOTA's biggest member, has total control over FIA and you'll see another break-away association.

minus ferrari which would seriously dampen FOTAs chances. It could be seen as a unification of FOTA & FIA w/ the Ferrari link. Or it can be seen as FOTA weakened b/c now FOTA's biggest member, has total control over FIA and you'll see another break-away association.
The easiest solution for F1s problems is Bernie getting in some sort of "accident"

or it can be seen that the FIA is really really really really really more bias to Ferrari because of the link...
"what do you mean we have movable floors... Todt, I think you should check again

REPORT: Kimi Räikkönen set to retire from F1 after 2009 season
by Sam Abuelsamid on Jul 18th 2009 at 4:17PM
Rumors are heating up that Ferrari Formula One driver Kimi Räikkönen will walk away from the grand prix circus at the end of the 2009 season. If the 2007 World Champion does quit, it would free up his seat for two-time champion Fernando Alonso. You'll recall that there's been talk of Alonso making the jump to Ferrari since well before his single unhappy season at McLaren. However, the circumstances have never quite worked out for him.
According to reports from his native Finland, Räikkönen may move over to full time rallying like so many of his compatriots before him. Kimi has already competed in three rallies this year and is set to do another later this month. Räikkönen still has another year left on his contract and Ferrari may end up paying his €28 million salary in order to keep him out of any other F1 seat in 2010.

Looks like Kimi may be retiring in a few months. Kinda
about it. It was fun cheering for his drunken antics, but it seems like he's been slacking off lately.

I wonder if he's just sick of all the BS and politics in F1 right now? It'll be sad to see him go.

My Italian is rusty, but looking at the website, it's low alcohol beer. It's claiming that 2 bottles of it will still put you under the legal limit (in Italy I'm assuming).

Henry Surtees dies after F2 crash
By Jonathan Noble Sunday, July 19th 2009, 20:09 GMT
Henry Surtees, the son of 1964 Formula 1 world champion John Surtees, has died following an accident in a Formula 2 race at Brands Hatch on Sunday.
During the second of the weekend's races, the 18-year-old was struck on the head by a wheel and tyre from the car of Jack Clarke, who had spun into the wall exiting Westfield Bend.
Surtees was knocked unconscious in the accident and his car failed to negotiate the following Sheene Corner, running straight off the track and into the barrier.
Medical crews were swiftly on the scene to extract Surtees from the car, before he was taken to the track's medical centre. He was stabilised at the circuit's facility before being airlifted to the Royal London hospital.
A spokesperson for the hospital this evening confirmed that Surtees had died from his injuries.
Surtees graduated to F2 this season from Formula Renault and had taken his first podium finish in the series with third place in Saturday's race at Brands Hatch.
His step up to the category came after several seasons in karts, which included victory in the Junior Gearbox Championship in 2005, before a graduation to car racing in the Ginetta Junior Championship in 2006.
He switched to single seaters in 2007, taking a race victory in Formula BMW UK for Carlin Motorsport en route to seventh overall in the standings - and second in the rookie cup.
He also made a brief foray into the Formula Renault UK championship that year, contesting the final two rounds at Thruxton as well as the Winter Series.
In 2008 he remained in Formula Renault, taking 12th in the final standings before finishing runner-up in the Winter Series with one victory and three podiums from four races. He also contested last year's British Formula 3 season finale in a National Class car for Carlin, taking one victory and one podium.
AUTOSPORT sends its sincere condolences to Henry's family and friends.

Isn't the car designed by Williams F1 to be a cheaper alternative to GP2?
