Since Renault has been suspended by the FIA for the next race following the Hungarian GP's loose-wheel incident - a sanction the team has appealed - rumours see a one-shot Ferrari deal for Alonso in time for the European Grand Prix in Valencia, a situation which would satisfy many local fans and boost ticket sales for the Spaniard's second home race of the season.

I'd be glued to my seat for that weekend :o

The "donut" ends on the right side. There's a gap between it and the caliper.

BMW's future in Formula 1 is in serious doubt amid mounting speculation that the German car manufacturer will announce its withdrawal from the sport at the end of this season, on Wednesday.

An emergency press conference has been called at BMW's headquarters in Munich, where it is suggested that the car company may reveal that it has decided to end its involvement in F1.

The invite to the press conference said it had been called because of 'current developments in motor sport.'

The press conference will be hosted by Dr. Norbert Reithofer, the chairman of the BMW board, Dr. Klaus Draeger, the director for development, and Mario Theissen, BMW motorsport director. The presence of such senior management figures suggests that the announcement will be very significant.

Officials at BMW refused to comment about what the press conference was about, but they did confirm that it was 'important' news.

BMW had hoped to fight for the world championship this year, but instead the F1.09 has fallen short of expectations. Its struggles, allied to the abandonment of its KERS, that BMW had pushed hard for in F1, are likely to have played a part in any decision about the future of the team.

Although BMW Sauber had a difficult start to the season, Theissen has made it clear on several occasions that the team's form had not changed the BMW Board's commitment to F1.

"We analysed and evaluated the situation and the F1 programme with the board prior to the start of the season in February," said Theissen in May. "It was overall a very positive evaluation and judgement, and that hasn't changed.

"Apparently everybody is disappointed about the sporting results, but other than that there is no news and we have not discussed it since."

However, sources suggest that a review meeting was planned for July to decide the future of the team - and this may be behind any announcement planned for the morning.

Should BMW confirm it is pulling out of the sport, it will be the second car manufacturer to do so in eight months - with Honda having announced last December that it was to leave the sport.

The announcement will be more of a surprise, however, because BMW Sauber was on the verge of signing a Concorde Agreement that would have committed the team to F1 until the end of 2012.

There is no reason why Flavio would ever allow this to happen. Its not like Ferrari are going to pay for Fernando to do a one-off race, and Renault aren't about to just give up their star to a rival to help the FIA put on a show. Both teams are contesting for 3rd in the constructors.

Who would they bring in to substitute for Massa? Last time one of Ferrari's main driver was out with an injury, they brought in Mika Salo (for Schumacher when he broke his leg). Would they contemplate using Gene or Badoer? or would they give someone else a try?

Schumacher's manager says he's not interested...

This is a long shot, but maybe they can use SATO for a race? That would be interesting to say the least!!!!!

Thought you were going to mention Montoya.

They could also use Mika Salo - he still races Ferrari's in GT2 Le Mans series. He pretty much outclassed Irvine when Schuey was out.

Kubica to Ferrari a possibility?

BMW's decision no surprise, FIA says

BMW Sauber star Robert Kubica is now a potential candidate to replace Felipe Massa at Ferrari, possibly even as soon as the European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain.

Although normally it would be highly unlikely for a works team to release a driver in the middle of the season, sources suggest that BMW's decision to pull out of the series may trigger a clause in Kubica's contract that, in effect, allows him to leave even before BMW officially stops at the end of the year.

The key is the prognosis for Massa's recovery. Although it's widely assumed that he will be out for the season, there has not yet been any official word on that. On the other hand, there remains a possibility that he won't able to drive at the start of 2010, and the team may well have to find a longer- term solution. The problem is that it obviously has to respect Massa's position and not be seen to be hiring a potential replacement for 2010 too prematurely.

Kubica is unlikely to jump ship unless it is 100 percent clear that he will get seven races this year, and he probably also will require a longer-term commitment from the team--in other words, that it becomes apparent that Massa won't be racing next year. In that case, Ferrari could end up with a Fernando Alonso-Kubica combination in 2010.

There perhaps remains a possibility that Kubica would go even if Ferrari cannot yet offer anything firm for 2010, on the basis that he has a better chance of advertising his talents to third parties in the Maranello car than with BMW.

BMW would obviously not be happy to lose its star driver at a time when it is keen to earn some points and salvage some respectability from this season, and one must assume that such a move would happen only if Kubica's contract has, in effect, been nullified by the news.

BMW has Christian Klein available as its third driver, but the Austrian has done little mileage and has not raced an F1 car since being dropped by Red Bull in 2006.

While we're on the subject of wild speculation of who is going to take Massa's seat, I've got another contender to throw into the ring:

Ferrari will pay a witchdoctor to raise the corpse of Ayrton Senna and take Massa's seat.
