finally got it to install, now I can't find a network driver (wired or wireless) that will work :hs:

edit: Finally, after 8+ hours of searching I finally found a solution to get the wired network working, which does me 0 good at home since I only have wireless via tethering... now if I can get the wireless working...

Four teams supported Renault case

By Jonathan Noble Wednesday, August 19th 2009, 10:01 GMT

Renault received letters of support from four of its rival teams in its bid to overturn its European Grand Prix race ban at this week's FIA International Court of Appeal hearing, it has been revealed.

On Wednesday, the FIA published the reasons behind the Court's decision to drop Renault's suspension from the Valencia event and replace it with a $50,000 (USD) fine for the unsafe release of Fernando Alonso after a pit-stop at the Hungarian GP.

In the reasons it was clearly explained that the ban was dropped because there was no proof that Renault deliberately let Alonso out of the pits without his front right wheel safely attached.

The findings stated: "The Court endorses the FIA's view that it is always necessary to have regard to the potential dangers which arise from a situation, as recent tragic incidents have proved.

"However, in assessing the penalty which is appropriate in an individual case, great care must be taken not to equate potential danger with conscious wrong-doing."

It was also revealed that Renault’s case was helped by the fact that Red Bull Racing, McLaren, Ferrari and Toyota all wrote letters supporting Renault’s case - with two teams admitting that their own pit-stop procedures have had to be changed to avoid a repeat of an Alonso-type situation.

The court stated: "The Court notes that it has taken account of the letters of support which the Appellant has received from Red Bull Racing, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, and Toyota F1 Team and which it has submitted to the Court.

"These letters confirm that two of the above-mentioned teams lay claim to having followed improved procedures precisely in order to avoid the very serious safety risks which unquestionable arose in the present case.

"While the Court accepts the FIA’s submissions that the letters should not be regarded as wholly unsolicited testimonials of support, it considers that it would be wrong in the circumstances of this case to ignore the other teams’ views, which they have formally recorded in writing with the knowledge and intention that they should be submitted to the Court."

Heikki Kovalainen has been told that he needs to raise his game over the remainder of the season if he is to have any chance of keeping hold of his seat at McLaren in 2010.

AUTOSPORT understands that Kovalainen's option for next year with McLaren has now lapsed, although the team has not ruled out retaining the Finn. Team principal Martin Whitmarsh has made it clear however that Kovalainen needs to deliver more in the next few races than he has shown so far this season - and the Finn was informed of the situation during a factory visit on Wednesday.

"Heikki is doing, as a team player, a fantastic job in this team," Whitmarsh said in a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes 'Phone-In' media call. "On his own evaluation he has not raced as well as he would have liked and we would have liked him to this year.

"I was frankly just talking to him on the subject a few minutes before this call. He is working hard...

"A lot of us want to see Heikki get some good results this year, and that will ensure that he remains with us. That is certainly our wish. His goal going into Valencia this weekend is to win - and he is capable of winning the race this weekend.

"He has been a good qualifier, he has done some good qualifying times, and he is capable of qualifying well and winning this race. So that is what he is going to focus on, and I've just had that conversation with him. Then on Sunday evening he will start thinking about Spa, and that is what we want him to focus on - not all the speculation."

In a boost to Kovalainen's situation, McLaren is adamant it has not begun discussions with any other driver yet about a seat in 2010, despite fresh rumours linking Nico Rosberg with the outfit now that the German's previous likely destination BMW Sauber is out of F1.

"Speculation is normal," said Whitmarsh. "We are not commenting on it, but I can confirm that contrary to some of the speculation we are not in discussions with any other drivers outside this team at the moment."

And, denying any talk that McLaren was under pressure to take a German driver to appease engine partner Mercedes-Benz, Whitmarsh said: "In terms of nationality, obviously some nationalities from a marketing perspective are more convenient, but McLaren continues to have the strategy and policy that we will get the two best drivers in our cars every season, and that is what we will continue to do."

Changes to qualifying in 2010 rules

By Simon Strang Wednesday, August 19th 2009, 17:35 GMT

The FIA's new sporting and technical regulations for the 2010 Formula 1 world championship, published today, feature changes to the qualifying procedure to accommodate the expected 26-car grid next year.

The hour-long session will still be split into three segments, but will now see the slowest eight dropped in the opening 20-minute Q1 session, and another eight in Q2 to allow for 10 drivers to contest the shoot-out over 10 minutes.

Moreover, in a move that will please fans, Q3 will now be run in low-fuel configuration with the regulations taking into account the re-fuelling ban for 2010.

Other significant points in the document, posted on the FIA's website, include a continuation of the current points system, as opposed to Bernie Ecclestone's previously mooted winner-takes-all medals scheme.

Each car's minimum weight has been raised to 620kg, to take into account the added weight of KERS - which will still be allowed under next year's regulations, despite FOTA's agreement not to use the system.

Tyre warmers will also be allowed, despite previous indications that they would be banned on cost-saving grounds.

The re-written regulations also no longer contain any reference to the proposals for a two-tier Formula 1, that was at the centre of the row between the sport's governing body and the Formula One Teams' Association prior to the signing of the tri-partite Concord Agreement last month.

Hooray for low fuel qualifying Q3. Meh on weight limit increase; 12 months too late for KERS to be an option of technical development for the future.

hmmm, if they are going to do refueling bans does that mean they are getting bigger fuel cells, or are they going to run shorter races???

With low fuel they will probably weigh the same as this year. I welcome the low fuel Q3 but its pretty much useless - I doubt lap records being set any time soon.

Its not about the lap records. It's about the absolute fastest car being at the front of the grid. None of this irregularly high quali position bullshit because someone decides to qualify with 10 laps of race fuel on board while everyone else has to quali with a full stint worth of fuel.

New teams?

The word on the street in Formula 1 circles is that the FIA will shortly announce two teams to be added to the 2010 entry list. It is not yet clear who these will be but it could be that an entity created by the former BMW Sauber will be one of them. There has been speculation that Prodrive will be one of them and that the Spanish operation Epsilon Euskadi could be another.

From what we hear, the Swiss team is the one struggling for cash as BMW wants more money than is available and there is also the problem of whether or not the team would be allowed to sign the Concorde Agreement, as the deadline for doing so was missed. Both Prodrive and Epsilon are believed to have access to the money needed to run a team but this is dependent on being granted entries, so they are both stuck in a chicken and egg situation with the FIA wanting suitable guarantees and potential sponsors wanting the security of knowing that they are buying into a franchise.

The one piece of good news that we have heard is that BMW may not be planning to simply shut up shop in Hinwil but has a plan to convert the factory into a research and development operation for its new environmentally-friendly models.
