Super Aguri is urging Honda's board to give its blessing to a buyout deal with German automotive company the Weigl Group that it says would secure the team's continued participation in Formula 1 for the "foreseeable future".
The Leafield-based squad has been fighting for survival since a proposed takeover by the Magma Group and Dubai International Capital fell through last month.
Super Aguri released a statement on Friday saying it was close to reaching an agreement with the Weigl Group that would see the German firm acquire a "substantial shareholding" in the team.
The statement read: "Super Aguri F1 Team and Weigl Group AG are in final discussions concerning an agreement for a substantial shareholding of the Formula 1 team.

What the hell? Rejecting? Was it not enough money or something?Inside sources say that the first time the Weigl Group was presented to the Honda Board, they rejected the offer, so it will be itneresting to see what Honda will do this time.
Also, for reference, the Weigl Group previously was a sponsor for the Midland/Spyker short lived era.

With 4 of those in the U.S.A.Good point, the wait is part of what makes it fun. I think 22 races would be a good balance...especially with weird ass street races around singapore and india.

Super Aguri denied access to Istanbul
By Jonathan Noble Sunday, May 4th 2008, 12:21 GMT
Super Aguri F1Super Aguri's trucks and motorhome have been refused access to the paddock at Istanbul ahead of next week's Turkish Grand Prix, autosport.com has learned, as the saga surrounding their future took a fresh twist on Sunday.
With the team hoping that a meeting with the Honda board this week will see a rescue package put forward by German automotive company the Weigl Group accepted, the outfit have been left baffled by events developing in Turkey.
Although the team's cars are currently in Britain pending the outcome of the talks with Honda, they had dispatched their spares trucks and motorhome to Turkey to prepare for the next race.
However, sources have revealed to autosport.com that neither the motorhome nor the trucks were allowed into the paddock where teams have begun setting up ahead of the next round of the world championship.
When asked for an explanation from officials about why they were not allowed access to the paddock, sources claim the reason was that Honda Racing CEO Nick Fry had informed Formula One management that Super Aguri would not be racing in Turkey.
The development comes just 24 hours after Fry made it clear that he did not believe the rescue package from Weigl was good enough to secure Super Aguri's future.
He said "It would appear unlikely that a company the size of Weigl is able to support a competitive Formula One team, unless of course there are other partners of which we have not been made aware."
Weigl himself hit back at those claims, revealing to autosport.com on Saturday that he did indeed have investment partners and a long-term plan for the team, and that he was confident of a positive outcome from the Honda board meeting.
Fry has made no secret of the fact that he does not want Super Aguri to continue being a drain on the resources of the Honda Racing F1 team. Speaking to autosport.com at the Spanish Grand Prix, Fry said he believed Honda had already supported Super Aguri far beyond what was originally intended.
"Our position is that Honda have given Super Aguri every available bit of support over and above what was anticipated," said Fry in Barcelona. "We tried to help as much as possible and Honda never intended to fund two F1 teams. We've gone way beyond what was ever originally anticipated. Now Aguri has got to find some money."
With no access to the paddock, Super Aguri's trucks and motorhome are parked outside the track waiting for further news from the team management. Team personnel have already begun travelling to the race.

nick fry still has his panties in a bunch over being embarrassed by SA for the 1st half of '07.

Not so much that as it is about his future with Honda.
Amongst all those rumours with Magma and its link to Fry, there were some truth in that.
Also, Weigl's plan was to pay back the 100million dollar debt to Honda in a 3 year installment plan as opposed to Magma's promise to pay it back in one shot.
In addition, the talk around the 'watercooler' is that Weigl is really doing all he can to ensure Super Aguri's survival, even by specifcying that he will make sure Sato is with Super Aguri for the future, while Fry is really just adamant on not seeing Super Aguri survive for partially a personal reason.

you'd think that getting the repayment in installments is better than letting SA go out of business and not getting any repayment at all...

The board is reconvening once Golden Week is over, so the final decision should be then because should they delay any further, Super Aguri will not be able to race at Turkey since Honda is literally holding their cars hostage right now.

In the small ounce of sympathy that should be shown towards Nick Fry, he does have a right to be whiny and pissed off and wanting Super Aguri gone, because I am sure in his mind his only justification for failing to do what Brawn is doing with Honda now is the fact that he blames his failure on the resources spent on Super Aguri in the past 2 years and not on the Honda facotry outfit.
