Ferrari does not expect Felipe Massa to return to the Formula 1 cockpit until the start of the 2010 season following the results of his medical examination in Miami on Monday.
The Brazilian visited the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit of the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami for a thorough examination by respected doctor Steve Olvey to asses his chances of recovery.
The prognosis was good, but the team said in a statement that with plastic surgery on Massa's skull due to be undertaken in the next few days, the team was not betting on Massa being ready to race in 2009.
"Obviously, the results of examination has been warmly welcomed in Maranello, in the sense that the team can count on Felipe 100% for the start of next season," said a Ferrari statement.
Massa is expected to have a small plate inserted into his skull at the area where it was damaged by the spring that hit his face during his qualifying crash for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Once that operation has taken place and Massa is fully recovered, he will then be able to resume physical training - having been forced to rest since his July accident.
"I'm very happy with the outcome of the tests," said Massa. "After the small operation I'll undergo in the next few days, I'll finally be able to start doing gym exercise to get back in shape a bit and, after that, I'll be able to start doing some testing on karts.
"On track with an F1 car? Let's go one step at a time: now I'm focused only on starting over with physical activity, which is already a nice step forward."
Ferrari is expected to decide in the next 48 hours who will drive its second car for the remainder of the season, with Luca Badoer having struggled for pace in the two races he has taken part in so far.
Giancarlo Fisichella has emerged as favourite to join the team, but Italian media on Tuesday suggested that Robert Kubica was also a serious possibility.
I still say he'll be back for Brazil

Team US F1 has become the first of the new outfits to formally apply to join the Formula One Teams' Association, AUTOSPORT has learned.
FOTA currently consists of eight of the current teams, with Williams and Force India having been suspended from the organisation following their decision to lodge entries to the 2010 championship amid the summer threats of a breakaway series.
F1's three new teams - US F1, Campos Grand Prix and Manor Grand Prix - have now all been told that they are welcome to join FOTA and have been informed about the procedures by which they can become members.
AUTOSPORT understands US F1 is the first outfit to formally accept the invitation and request membership - with its application due to be examined by FOTA's executive committee at the Italian Grand Prix.
Discussions between FOTA and Williams and Force India are also ongoing about their future positions. Force India COO Simon Roberts said after the Belgian Grand Prix that he would discuss the matter with team owner Vijay Mallya soon.
"I think we've been invited back in," he told AUTOSPORT. "I talked to Vijay earlier. We have participated whenever we can. We complied with all of the shutdown restrictions and we're quite happy with that.
"To be honest, we've been really busy. Before the shutdown it was fine because we knew what was happening, but we've been struggling to pick it back up. Now we've had this result we can relax a bit, discuss it with Vijay and take up that offer."
Williams' position appears to be slightly different, with the team admitting that it was not a given that it would rejoin FOTA.
Team boss Frank Williams told AUTOSPORT about his outfit's relationship with FOTA: "It is a little arms' length but it is not hostile.
"We had a difficulty because we chose to sign (our 2010 entry) early, and in truth, we signed the Concorde Agreement early. That is because most of our sponsors' condition is that we are a member of the official FIA F1 world championship and the promoters' Concorde Agreement."

I still say he'll be back for Brazil
meh, with that type of injury, its better to play it safe and do it right. say he comes back in brazil, finishes dead last, could jeopardize his 2010 seat

If Giancarlo Fisichella puts his signature on a five-race deal to finish the season with Ferrari, he is likely to then stay with the Maranello-based team next year and beyond as test driver.
The news means that not only does Luca Badoer face imminently losing his opportunity to race in injured Felipe Massa's race boots, but his long tenure as test driver dating back to the late nineties might also be over.
The suggestion is that Tonio Liuzzi is set to move into the Force India race seat full time next year, and immediately if Fisichella's Ferrari switch is completed ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.
"There is a lot of noise around about this," Liuzzi, currently Force India's test driver but reportedly already with a race contract for 2010, told GPWeek.
"For sure regarding the rumours I hope they are right. I need to drive as soon as possible because I am dying without racing. There is a high chance that something could happen."
It also emerges that Liuzzi is scheduled to conduct a straight line test in the Mercedes-powered VJM02 prior to the Italian Grand Prix. However, it is believed that the Monza reshuffle will occur depending on the outcome of medical tests currently being undergone by Massa in Miami.
Should the Brazilian get clearance to return to his seat sooner rather than later, Ferrari may be content to simply keep Badoer in the car for now.
It is believed that, according to a source close to his race engineer Rob Smedley, one test on Massa has already been completed, and the results were more positive than expected.

Totally...1/3 soap opera, 1/3 science fiction (almost not this year until KERS started to work
), and 1/3 racing.
It needs the right kind of 1/3 soap opera though...not Bernie & Max trying to kill F1 kinda soap opera

No-one remembers Kovafailin handing Fisichella his ass almost every race at Renault now its like Fisichella is the 2nd coming of Hamilton. Good racing is enough to tie me over til the next season, I don't much like reading James Allen blogs.

no one remembers how much Jenson sucked for the past ever till he got a Brawn car for the first 7 races, then everyone thought he was the second coming of Jesus till the rest of the teams got up to speed, then he went back to his roots and is now a mid packer again...

What? Are they deliberately trying to make an unappealing driver lineup? Jacques + Montagny? At this rate they might as well announce a Luca Badoer and Yuji Ide lineup.WTH is USF1 doing? Frank Montagany?

If they're really serious about getting American support, sign Scott Speed and Alexander Rossi.
