i don't think their clear #1 status will last beyond race #5. there, i said it...

i agree... its going to be hard for them to keep up. but success early on could bring on alot of big name sponsors and the money/staff to keep pushing.

Honestly, I don't understand how they don't have a BUNCH of people kicking the doors down to throw money at them right now. They absolutely dominated quali and the race, and are constantly discussed by the media. I assume Branson will end up giving them more money after their two race deal is concluded, but I figured they'd have more by now.

That said, I sort of want some blank BrawnGP gear. :wtc:

I want a nice quality F1-style T-shirt, not just a shirt with a BrawnGP logo. Both because I like the actual F1 gear (the driver shirts are generally an odd fabric), and the fact that it would support the team.

Then again, RBR seems to think Button was 'toying' with them as far as pace. Seems to make sense as he'd seemingly open up gaps at will on Vettel whenever need arose. If that's the case, and they're still significantly faster than they've shown even so far, the grid may have a bit of a challenge.

I'm leaning to agree with RBR... rubens with a busted front wing and missing diffuser sliced and diced through the field. and anytime Vettel closed the gap to button, he'd start pulling away again...

I don't think we've seen the potential of the BGP yet... at least at this next GP we can see how it can handle higher speed tracks... this weekend should show if the BGP have the pace...

and i agree with Kerozen? that Brawn's dominance might not go on for too long. Maybe even less than round 5.

Hopefully RBR can improve and Webbah can walk under a ladder, cross the path of a black cat on friday 13th and break a mirror in order to get a win this season.

some drivers are asking for the race to be red flagged in such an event.

this shifting the start time idea is such failboat. if the europeans can't wake up a few hours early to watch a race then they need to go fuck themselves. we do it every damn race here :wtc:

Eh...I kinda think the drivers are making a mountain out of a mole. Granted, I haven't driven an F1 car ever at twlight but I figure if rally drivers can go thru Ice & Snow in the middle of the night with trees on either side @ 90mph, F1 drivers should be able to drive in the evening.

the difference is that the trees don't move, whereas other cars on track are. i don't think they're saying they can't drive in the conditions, just that racing in those conditions would be dangerous.

Hamilton switches to Brawn GP!

In a surprise statement issued shortly after midnight on this date, the highly competitive Brawn GP team shocked the F1 community by announcing that Lewis Hamilton is switching to the Brackley-based outfit for the remainder of the 2009 season.

The reigning World Champion will therefore leave the McLaren Mercedes team with immediate effect, and will be wearing the Brawn operation's white overalls at this week-end's Malaysian Grand Prix.

“It was a logical decision to make when considering the situation both our teams are facing at present,” Ross Brawn stated. “Everyone is very confident in regards to our potential in both the drivers' and constructors' championships.”

It seems that Brawn GP's current budget, combined with the lack of performance provided by McLaren's new single-seater, provoked an important brainstorming session within the Mercedes camp which ultimately resulted in pushing the daring plan forward and putting the best chances on their side.

“You have to look at the numbers,” explained Norbert Haug, VP of Mercedes-Benz Motorsports. “By switching Lewis and part of our budget to Brawn – which is already Mercedes-powered – statistically we can manage to win both championships this season.”

“I know there's only been one race so far this year,” Haug admitted, “but it adds up.

”

“This is really a wonderful gesture,” said a smiling Hamilton. “This is the best way for me to help my regular team move forward. With the spotlight on me at Brawn while I win all these races, McLaren don't have to worry about having a World Champion aboard and all that pressure.”

“Really,” he added, “I don't know why I hadn't thought of this myself!”

Ron Dennis, Martin Whitmarsh and Anthony Hamilton issued a joint statement which reads: “We have raised this child to be a World Champion again and again (…) this is a bold step in preserving that goal.”

The situation means that either Jenson Button or Rubens Barrichello will have to move aside to make place for Hamilton. The decision regarding who will sit in the vacated McLaren car has not yet been made, but the news was obviously badly received.

“I think not,” said Button. “You see, I'm spotted to be the next Brit F1 star.”

zOMG.

Toyota has withdrawn its appeal, but the case of Jarno Trulli's confiscated Melbourne podium may not be over, according to Auto Motor und Sport.

The reigning world champion was promoted to third place while Trulli demoted to 12th, after stewards ruled that Trulli illegally passed the Briton's McLaren behind the safety car.

Toyota had argued that the Italian only passed Hamilton because the McLaren Mercedes driver pulled over and slowed down. Hamilton was subsequently quoted by a reporter as admitting the team told him to let Trulli past.

Auto Motor und Sport claims however that Hamilton denied driving slowly to let Trulli past. Instead, the Briton told stewards he simply moved off the racing line 'because he was busy reading the safety car instructions from the display'.

FIA officials, however, are now querying this explanation, as the safety car instructions would have long been cleared from Hamilton's display.

Moreover, despite his apparent admission to the reporter, Hamilton is believed to have told the stewards that he did not intentionally let Trulli pass.

In the past days, the FIA officials have checked Hamilton's radio traffic at the time of the incident, and speculation suggests that the stewards investigation may be re-opened in Malaysia this weekend.

don't know if this is an april fools thing or not...
but like someone said, hamiliton might have told the media one thing and the stewards another... who knows...

That was me! Nacho was saying it wouldn't make sense for anyone to do what Hamilton may have done--say one thing to the stewards and another to the press.

i agree it doesn't make sense to do that, but the kid is young and perhaps he spilled the beans accidentally without running it by his press officer first, then at the stewards meeting (after the team had obviously gone through some sort of debrief) he gave a different story. anyway we'll see in a few days whats to come of this..

autosport has picked up this story now too.. and april fools etiquette in the UK is that the jokes don't go on past noon on 4/1 so this story might be legit..

Hamilton, Trulli summoned by FIA

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, April 2nd 2009, 04:16 GMT

Lewis Hamilton and Jarno Trulli have been formally summoned to a fresh stewards inquiry to discuss what happened between them under the safety car at the Australian Grand Prix.

As AUTOSPORT reported yesterday, the stewards have been reconvened to examine new evidence, believed to be radio conversations between Hamilton and his McLaren team, to clarify whether Hamilton deliberately slowed to let Trulli overtake him near the end of the race.

Trulli was handed a 25-second time penalty, in lieu of a drive-through punishment, for overtaking Hamilton for third place in the closing stages of the Melbourne race.

That dropped him from third place to 12th overall in the standings, promoting Hamilton up to the final spot on the podium.

Although the stewards ruled that Trulli had been in breach of the regulations, the Toyota driver has maintained his innocence - claiming that Hamilton slowed deliberately.

Speaking to Malaysia's New Strait Times, Trulli said: "The FIA really got it wrong in that decision. We have all the evidence, including Hamilton's admission, that I did not overtake him. He let me pass.

"Under those circumstances, Hamilton had a problem and he slowed down, almost stopping. And he allowed me to pass. There was nothing else I could do, but keep going, and in order to do that, I had to pass him."

Hamilton said in the immediate aftermath of the race that he slowed down to let Trulli pass him following instructions from his team.

The FIA has called the meeting under Article 179b of the International Sporting Code, which gives the governing body the right of review of events if 'a new element' is discovered.

The FIA has recalled Olafur Gudmundsson and Steve Chopping, stewards from the Australian GP, to the hearing with Hamilton and Trulli - which is to take place at 1pm local time in Malaysia. In addition, Malaysian GP steward Surinder Thatti will join them to rule if the decision to demote Trulli in Malaysia should be upheld.
