2 bits of news, 1 hilarious - 1 awesome!

Flava Flav gets married

Flamboyant Renault Formula One boss Flavio Briatore married top model Elisabetta Gregoraci in lavish style in Rome on Saturday serenaded by British pop group Duran Duran.
F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone witnessed the union along with Benetton group chairman Luciano Benetton and right-wing politician Daniela Santanche, while the more than 300 guests also included Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi and Spain's former prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar.
French cardinal Paul Poupard celebrated what the Italian press has dubbed the "wedding of the year", uniting the 58-year-old playboy and Gregoraci, 28, in the 12th-century Santo Spirito in Sassia, near the Vatican.

"I'm as excited as if a Grand Prix race was starting," Briatore was quoted as saying, with press reports noting his bride had coaxed him towards faith, along with a health scare in 2006, when kidney cancer was averted through an early diagnosis.
About 500 hours went into creating the gown worn by Gregorachi, a former Miss Calabria, the Italian press reported.
Afterward, Briatore's Spanish protege, Fernando Alonso drove the newlyweds to the reception at the Castello di Torcrescenza, a sumptuous castle residence just north of Rome.
Festivities had began on Friday with a dinner at the posh Casina Valadier, and were to continue the next day.
Briatore, one of the richest men in Formula One, was behind the emergence of Michael Schumacher with Benetton in the 1990s and Alonso with Renault.
The unabashed party animal and quintessential Italian playboy has chalked up an impressive array of romantic conquests, including Naomi Campbell, Nicole Kidman, Heidi Klum and Vanessa Kelly.

As excited as an F1 start - how many times has this dude been married?

F1 stays at Albert Park - fuck yeah

F1 to stay in Melbourne until 2015
09:50 AEST Sun Jun 15 2008
Melbourne looks set to continue hosting F1 races.
A deal to extend Melbourne's Grand Prix contract by five years is expected within days.

Melbourne is set to retain its Formula One Grand Prix until 2015.
A deal is expected to be signed off with Grand Prix bosses within days, extending Melbourne's contract by five years, News Limited reports.
A verbal agreement has been reached and a senior government source confirmed the race would stay in Melbourne, saying an announcement was "imminent".
"We haven't signed the deal but we're going to quite soon," the source said.
Melbourne has been in danger of losing the Grand Prix after the race racked up losses of up to $160 million in the past 12 years amid speculation organisers were seeking a more lucrative host offshore.
The new deal is expected to include a later timeslot - around 5pm - to accommodate European television audiences.
But the government has again ruled out a night race.
F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone had pushed for a night timeslot to save the Melbourne race, threatening to take the event to India, Russia or Korea if local organisers refused.
Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding said the timeslot was non-negotiable.
"We have ruled out a night race and that is not negotiable," he said.
"This is a good event for the state. It's one we want to keep and we'll be working hard to ensure that it does remain here in Melbourne in the years ahead."

Awesome shit - another good track doesnt bite the dust

cubicle to ferrari?

Seven races into the 2008 championship, F1's annual 'silly season' has found a higher gear.

The latest gossip from Italy is that Nico Rosberg, Williams' German driver who was courted by McLaren at the end of last year, has now triggered the interest of BMW Sauber.

BMW's existing driver, the young world championship leader Robert Kubica, was asked by the newspaper La Stampa if he endorses the idea of farewelling Nick Heidfeld at the end of 2008.

"For me it wouldn't change anything," the Pole said. "It doesn't matter if it's Nick or it's Nico. My team-mate is only one of the 19 drivers I have to beat."

"With regards to contracts, this is not my job so I leave it to others."

It has also been suggested recently that Kubica's quick and consistent form this year may even have stirred the interest of Ferrari.

Fascinatingly, the 23-year-old does not deny that it is most drivers' 'dream' to move to the Italian squad.

"And if I am not mistaken, in Italy you have the saying, 'things come to those who wait'."

BMW's not going to let go of Kubica to Ferrari. Very slim chance in hell -- they'll do whatever it takes to prevent him from defecting. I see Emo going to Ferrari for sure though. If Ferrari can put up with his whiny-Spanish attitude.

Anyone else get the feeling that F1 is on really shaky grounds???

No clear path to the future, disagreements over how funds are proportioned, a greedy Jew, and a dirty Brit is what F1 has to lead them...This doesn't seem hot. Even NASCAR has a brighter, more solid future than this :hs:

A clear message from Ecclestone to Mosley

Despite refusing to admit responsibility for the 'breakaway' rumours, Bernie Ecclestone concedes that splitting with the FIA is a possible solution to Formula One's current troubles.

The F1 Chief Executive initially sided with his former friend and ally of 40 years, Max Mosley, when a British tabloid newspaper exposed the FIA president in a sadomasochistic romp with prostitutes.

Since then, however, 77-year-old Ecclestone has come under immense pressure from elsewhere, including Mosley's key adversaries who have used his allegedly Nazi-themed sex antics as ammunition.

Ecclestone also revealed that Jewish investors, who control much of the money flowing into Formula One, are unhappy with Mosley.

"They say the FIA shouldn't let somebody like Max represent them," the Briton said in an interview at the weekend with The Times.

Ecclestone admits that taking F1's ten teams, sponsors, promoters and TV broadcast deals to a separate series - probably to be called 'GP1' - is one possible outcome.

"At the moment what we are trying to do, to keep sponsors happy, is say we can't break away, but it could well be that that will happen," he said.

Ecclestone and the teams are currently pushing for a new Concorde Agreement with the FIA, but Mosley is refusing to agree to their terms and the previous contract has lapsed.

It is clear that Ecclestone and Mosley fundamentally disagree about F1's income.

"If Max comes back and says we should give more money to teams, I will tell him to mind his own bloody business," Ecclestone said.

He accuses Mosley of 'time-wasting' because the FIA has no commercial investments in the sport.

But Ecclestone warns: "All they've got is money that comes from Formula One. If there was no Formula One, the FIA would be in serious trouble."

Robert Kubica has revealed that he is no longer as close to Formula One rival Lewis Hamilton as he once was.

23-year-old Kubica, who snatched the lead of the drivers' championship from the similarly aged Hamilton in Canada a week ago, has known his new title challenger since their karting days.

But although they are often cited as contemporaries and friends, Kubica played down their closeness in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa.

"We have had similar careers and there is mutual respect," Kubica said. "But I have the impression that we embarked on our adventure in F1 with a different mindset and this has made us lose a bit of contact."

"And he doesn't know how to play poker," Kubica joked.

The poker reference is significant; Kubica's closest F1 ally is Fernando Alonso, with whom he often whiles away downtime during GP weekends.

Alonso, of course, fell out spectacularly with Hamilton and McLaren team chiefs in 2007.

Some commentators have also contrasted Kubica's 'basic needs' out of life with Hamilton's perceived extravagance.

While Hamilton's recent exploits involved attending movie premieres, holidaying with pop stars and attending the MTV music awards, former Grand Prix driver Martin Brundle observes that Kubica only wants "a roof over his head, food and a fast racing car."

Kubica even brushed off La Stampa's invitation to describe his burgeoning talents at the wheel of a F1 racer.

"Rather than talents, to me it is more important to focus on your weaknesses and try to improve them," he insisted.

I never realized Kubica was so young, I thought he was older :hs:

Exactly. But what if the teams said "Lets breakaway from F1" And BE says "No. no more money to be given to the teams. Let them make their own series...I'm not worried"

Then we would have quite a bit of a problem...Thing is, I can easily see BE doing this. Look at how many times he has said that one of the traditional tracks aren't needed in the past. He doesn't care. He goes where he smells money. He kisses so much ass in the middle east since they're willing to give him so much money. But tracks like Spa, Suzuka, Silverstone have always been a fan-favorite, but publicly trashed by BE. And he's even gone as far as saying Monaco could even lose its spot in the past.

That old man needs to just die.

the good thing about F1 and the bad thing about F1 are the same commercial wise. It's a huge success for promotion, money hand over fist. Problem though is that there are huge booming markets right now in Asia and the Middle East which want the the public eye, so of course you're going to follow it...

hell, my company opened up an office in Dubai last year, and we're building a new state of the art factory in China that should be done in 2 years time...

True. I guess I'm bitter about losing favorite tracks...still, things could be going a lot better -- if a Grand Prix is making $230mil in revenue a race, Bernie needs to recognize that he needs to put the sport first and his greed 2nd...

They would have to be retarded to leave the name of "Formula 1", there's too much value and history in it to risk starting something new. They'll figure something out.

:hs:

Bernie is proving himself to be the true scumbag. Max may be a pervert and has had some terrible ideas for the sport, but everything he has alluded to with Bernie has been true. Bernie doesn't care about tradition, he doesn't care about the quality of racing, he doesn't care about the teams making enough money to stay interested.

He has a very shortsighted, corporate attitude towards the sport. Maximising profit this quarter without much thought given to where f1 is going to be in 10 years.

American F1 team? Sato? :o

Following Super Aguri's demise, Honda may soon have another satellite Formula One team up and racing.

Reports from Portugal claim that Ken Anderson, a well-known US engineer who has worked in prominent F1 roles, is in promising talks about setting up an American outfit.

The reports said that while nothing is guaranteed, the Honda-powered team could be ready to debut as soon as 2009.

Anderson was reportedly a Honda guest throughout the recent Montreal race weekend, meeting with team chiefs Ross Brawn and Nick Fry.

None of the parties wanted to comment, but sources close to Honda have apparently said that the Japanese manufacturer is ready to sell engines, gearboxes and KERS systems to the new team.

Anderson is said to be meeting with F1 Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone in London this week.

The US outfit would be assisted by Honda's North American arm, as well as several backers from within the US, while Takuma Sato is favourite for the lead cockpit.

Portugal's Alvaro Parente, who made his F1 test debut in January as a prize for winning the 2007 World Series by Renault, was mentioned as a possibility for the other seat.

The reports said Anderson's F1 team could be announced officially in mid-summer.
