read this in last month's F1 and talked to David about it, but surprised it hasn't been mentioned here

The first F1 race at Abu Dhabi may also be the first broadcast in HD

F1 may finally be broadcast in true HD for the first time ever later this year.

Discussions are under way about broadcasting the 2009 F1 season finale – the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – in high definition.

This could be a useful boost for F1’s high-profile end-of-season event at the ambitious new Yas Marina venue. Jenson Button’s increasing lead in the championship makes it less likely the season will culminate in a down-to-the-wire contest as it has for the last three years.

Formula 1’s uptake of high definition has been painfully slow. Rival championships like A1 Grand Prix have had the technology for some time and NASCAR has been broadcasting in HD since 2005. Last year NASCAR was even available in HD in Britain where it is very much a minority sport.

BBC F1 reporter Lee Mckenzie mentioned on Twitter revealed this year that the hold-up on HD is at FOM’s end: broadcasters like BBC are ready to roll with HD coverage, but FOM aren’t supplying a high definition feed. “I think maybe 2010 [they will] though” she added.

As someone who bought a high definition TV a few months ago in the belief that F1 could not possibly go much longer without catching up with the rest of the broadcasting world, this is good (if long overdue) news!

Only 1 shunt in 07 at China. Was a nice shunt though

Umm, no. That wasn't even a shunt, that was a just beaching it. He definitely drove it up under some tire barriers in teh summer of 07, after france, and germany...it had to be Turkey, then?

Yes, but no way I would ever call a Senna a Piquet. :D

Still I wonder how much capacity BGP had to build one or two more cars...

Hammy wrote off, what, one chassis his rookie year? The only thing I can think of was his shunt in Hungary 07.

Maybe another car, but that would've sacrificed their ability to work on '10's car.

With all those spare chassis's...I wonder if I can pick one up?

Suck me beautiful. I worked all week with the flu, somethings are a little more fuzzy than others.

And I wasn't talking about retirements, I was talking about chassis replacing accidents. If he had to use the T-car/spare chassis that weekend I was right.

McLaren not interested in bidding war
By Glenn Freeman Saturday, October 24th 2009, 09:14 GMT

McLaren is not interested in being part of a bidding war for any driver over the winter, according to Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug.

Several high-profile drivers have been linked to the seat alongside Lewis Hamilton at the team next year, including Kimi Raikkonen and Nico Rosberg.

But with teams like Toyota also understood to be chasing a top-line driver for its 2010 line-up, Haug says that McLaren will not consider any driver that is more interested in a big-money deal than race-winning car.

"Kimi is an option, but there are lots of options around," Haug told AUTOSPORT. "One thing is for sure though - guys who are out for money are not the right ones for us – whoever it may be.

"I won't name anyone, but we want to have full commitment from someone who is success-oriented, not someone saying 'I am a big name, pay me a lot of money and I will drive for you.'

"The team has to be convinced that a driver is hungry, motivated, focused, and that his first thought is not to get more money."

Haug believes that McLaren's form in the second half of the season proves that it will be a regular contender for wins again next year.

"We have shown our level of competitiveness – Lewis has scored race wins and podiums, and beaten the guys that have been going for the title this year," he added.

"It shows that we are going in the right direction. We have stabilised this year, and we have a seat to offer in a race-winning car. There are probably three, four, five teams maximum that can offer that."

"The contract they have is the contract we like. We are not prepared to charge less. Do we need a British Grand Prix? No," Bernie retorted, "I want a British Grand Prix, of course, but we are not going to do special rates for Britain."

Rumor mill is keeping Button at Brawn....

Jenson Button's contractual negotiations with the Brawn team are nearing a positive end, the new World Champion's manager Richard Goddard has revealed.

The 29-year-old Briton is said to be unwilling to apply the number 1 to the team's 2010 car in the absence of a substantial pay increase, having agreed to slash his retainer amid the management buyout last winter following former owner Honda's decision to leave the sport.

Reports of the disagreement had reportedly fuelled McLaren's rumoured interest in signing Button, but Goddard told the Mail on Sunday newspaper that he now expects a deal with Brawn to be reached within weeks.

"I understand the team are about to make us an offer and, as previously stated, Jenson wants to stay with Brawn," he said.

The newspaper added that the offer is "close to" the amount Button is seeking: 8m pounds sterling (€8.7m/$13m US).

Team boss Ross Brawn agrees that Button deserves a pay rise.

"(His current) contract is not the salary of a World Champion, not the salary of a team that is in a much stronger position than it was 10 months ago," he told BBC radio's Sportweek programme.

Asked if he is 100 per cent sure Button will be driving next year's Brawn, he added: "You're never 100 per cent, but I'd say 99 per cent."

Brawn said he aims to have the situation clarified by mid November.

....while Boobens is off to Williams.

The news remains unofficial, but a well-connected figure on Sunday all but confirmed the composition of Williams' driver line-up for 2010.

The British team heads into this weekend's Abu Dhabi season finale with Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima at the wheel of the FW31s, but the Williams team looks set for a wholesale change ahead of its next championship campaign.

Rosberg is likely to head to Brawn, while Kazuki Nakajima is out of favour at Williams due to the forthcoming parting of ways with the Japanese driver's backer, engine supplier Toyota.

Over the last few weeks speculation has been sending Barrichello to Williams in 2010. To Brazil's SporTV recently, he remained evasive on the question: "I have the possibility of being with Brawn and also with others."

However Willi Weber, famous in F1 circles for being Michael Schumacher's manager, let the cat out of the bag when speaking to Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper about his new charge, the 22-year-old rookie and current Williams test driver Nico Hulkenberg.

"I think he will be a match for his new teammate Barrichello," Weber said.

Button is being a bitch and needs to grow some nuts.

Anyone would give their manhood to race in a championship winning car and only receive $3-5 million salary. Harden up Princess.

Agreed, but there is a certain amount of merit in his "Hey, I just won the WDC, how 'bout a raise?".

But considering what the team went through 10 months ago, he should skip the media posturing.

His 13 mil salary request really isn't that bad, all things considered.

I mean, let's look @ Kimi who's demanding 25 mil in salary on top of his 25 mil buyout. :(

I agree, asking for a raise after winning the championship isn't too much to ask for...
but I'd also think about the team and realize that 1 year ago nothing was there and if i want to stay at a team like brawn, maybe giving up a few $$$ to get a better car next season so i stand a chance to fight for back to back, might be a better option...
