http://forums.f1-cre...p...ost&p=25348What's the deal with the diffusers? What makes the 3 teams sooo much different than the others? I haven't been able to find out why...
the way a diffuser works is by expanding the flow out of the exit, and thus creating an area of low pressure. lower pressure on the bottom of the car + higher pressure on the top of the car = downforce. think of the opposite of what a nozzle does, and that's basically a diffuser.
the 3 teams have exploited a loophole in where they go beyond the legal design space of the diffuser by extending their designs to use the rear crash structure as part of the diffuser. this increased area allows them to expand the flow more than the other teams, creating lower pressures at the bottom rear of the car. the overall effect is that the cars with these diffusers have either more downforce or are capable of obtaining the same downforce with less rear wing angle of attack (hence less drag)

WORD. Thanks. I've been looking all over for that great piece of info.

last night in the closing shots of FP2 on speed, they did a quick montage of 5 or 6 different cars showing the differences...

i would probably pay a bit more attention to FP1 times as opposed to FP2 times just because towards the end of FP2 nobody was really putting down any decent laps. the track temps dropped from around 32C to 27C in the last 35mins, and even rosberg was a few seconds off pace. in fact the only teams that seemed to not have a huge decrease in performance as the track temps cooled were brawn, renault and ferrari, and brawn was pretty much close to the sharp end all day.6 of the top 7 times are cars with diffusers...
considering that these guys will have to quali and race starting at 5pm (when the track started to cool) it may give ferrari and renault a boost.

ferrari's have never run better in cooler temps, they seem to like the heat... if it's cooler, who knows this season with all the rule changes...

That's when Boobens set his fastest lap of FP2.i would probably pay a bit more attention to FP1 times as opposed to FP2 times just because towards the end of FP2 nobody was really putting down any decent laps. the track temps dropped from around 32C to 27C in the last 35mins, and even rosberg was a few seconds off pace. in fact the only teams that seemed to not have a huge decrease in performance as the track temps cooled were brawn, renault and ferrari, and brawn was pretty much close to the sharp end all day.

isnt quali and race about same time as FP2 was this year? so its a good indicator
