Drivers part of the problem at Sauber

Part of the reason for Sauber's competitive struggle so far in 2010 is the drivers, according to boss and founder Peter Sauber.

In the wake of former owner BMW's withdrawal at the end of 2009, this year's C29 showed well during winter testing, but Sauber is now the only established team yet to score a single point.

Sauber, 66, has now admitted that the car was probably more lightly fuelled than its rivals during the pre-season, while also acknowledging that the "uncertainty" about the team's future, and the reductions in staff and budget, had an impact.

But in an interview with F1's official website, the Swiss also admitted: "I am convinced that the fact that both our drivers are new in the team plays a certain role."

Sauber signed long-time McLaren driver Pedro de la Rosa, as well as feisty Japanese rookie Kamui Kobayashi, for the 2010 season, but contrary to earlier reports, the pair have not brought any significant sponsorship to the team.

Sauber admitted: "The communication and cooperation between the drivers and engineers at the moment is not where it ideally should be. That is not a criticism, just a sort of diagnosis."

He refused to say whether, with hindsight, he would make the same decision to sign Spaniard de la Rosa, 39, alongside 23-year-old Kobayashi.

"I do not want to touch on the issue of the drivers as it would be inappropriate. I took this driver lineup decision, and the considerations that led to the decision are still valid.

"What we probably underestimated is the time it would take for the drivers' familiarisation. Pedro, after many years as a test driver, is now back racing and that acclimatisation process is probably more challenging than we anticipated," said Sauber.

Dont really know why he is saying all this now unless as rumored the Spanish sponsored PDLR is meant to bring arent materialising and we might be seeing him replaced.

Either way its clear for everyone to see that the car is crap and horribly unreliable so what would better drivers achieve at this point?

A better development path and better sponsorship possibilities. :wtc:

I think Peter Sauber's reasoning for bringing in PDLR was because he felt having a guy who knew the intricacies of the McLaren development and testing program would aid their pace of development over a season. The fact that PDLR sucks as a race driver is something they have to deal with since in-season testing is so limited and they need him to get as much seat time as possible to get the feedback they need. What they need though is another driver capable of bring home the goods on Sunday to capitalize on this. Although he's pretty ballsy and quick, I don't really see KK playing that role of a consistent points scorer.

Considering the only time a Sauber finished a race was Melbourne (PDLR in...11th I think?) and all the other retirements were due to the car and not the drivers I dont think its fair to say KK isnt doing his job. Hell he qualified 9th in Malaysia.

Personally I think they stopped development because they were flat broke by the last 1/4 of the season.

That and they were still dealing with a compromised chassis.

Although they must have done something right during the season because it seemed like the cars were a bit more competitive in the last handful of races than they were at the middle of the year (britain, etc)

I always assumed Sauber brought in PDLR because of his test driver skills not because of his race qualifications... and we all know Koby can man handle a car around a track...

So FI are saying now that they are hoping to leapfrog Renault, who in turn say they'll overtake Mercedes. :wtc: to them if they can pull it off and get 4th in the constructors.

Whut?? Symonds & Briatorie not banned by FIA anymore and no more legal actions pursued?

http://www.autosport...rt.php/id/82849

Symonds allowed to work as consultant

Pat SymondsPat Symonds will be allowed to work as a consultant for any Formula 1 team right away, the Briton has clarified, after reaching a settlement with the FIA over the race-fixing scandal.

The governing body said on Monday that both Symonds and Flavio Briatore would be allowed to work directly in grand prix after the end of 2012, after agreeing to put an end to their legal dispute.

The duo had previously received a ban that was later overturned by a French court.

However, according to Symonds, the agreement reached with the FIA means that he can already start working for any Formula 1 team as a consultant through his Neutrino Dynamics company.

On Tuesday, the former Renault chief of engineering, issued a statement saying that he will continue to contribute to Formula 1 in his role whenever possible.

"Under this agreement Pat Symonds acknowledges that it was his duty to prevent such an event occurring and, in not doing so, he must share in the responsibility attached to this incident," said Symonds in a statement.

"As such, and with the best interests of the sport in mind, he has agreed with the FIA that he will not take a direct operational role in Formula 1 until the end of 2012 nor will he take any similar role in any team involved in any other FIA series until the end of 2011.

"This agreement does not prevent him acting as a consultant to any team during this period and he will continue to contribute to the sport in this, and other, ways.

"In the light of this agreement, both he and the FIA consider the matter to be at an end."

McLaren boss calls Veyron "junk," claims Top Gear race with F1 staged

by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Apr 13th 2010 at 3:32PM

When you've been responsible for as many Formula One World Championships and devastatingly fast supercars – including the new McLaren MP4-12C (pictured above) – as Ron Dennis, you're entitled to speak your mind... and for others to listen up. The executive chairman and part owner of the McLaren Group, Dennis has earned a reputation for his outspoken opinion, and this time directed his criticism toward the venerable Bugatti Veyron.

In a recent interview, Dennis characterized the Veyron as a "piece of junk" and "pig ugly". Why don't you tell us how you really feel, Ron?

The speed guru went on to allege that the race staged by Top Gear between the Veyron and McLaren's own venerable F1 supercar on the streets of Abu Dhabi was exactly that... staged. According to Dennis, the McLaren had the Bugatti handily beat on every run, and that the video footage was edited to make it seem like the Veyron was the quicker of the two. Check it out after the jump and decide for yourself.

Veyron is ugly. Yet probably still faster than an 18 year old car..................................

I also agree with the fucking of Force India.

Sauber interview seemed pretty on point to me. Not that he was disparaging either driver.

Really? How can you dislike that team?

They let Fisi fulfill his dream by letting him race for Ferrari, and is now in their third season of F1 - whom everyone thought they'd be out by now. I think everyone here thought it was just VM's toy and that he'd dump it - but they're now a force to challenge the best of the rest. How can you NOT like this team?

Other than DDA's personal issues :wtc:

I actually don't dislike FI ever since they've shown that they're serious.

I don't think i'll ever root for the team, but i'll certainly not root against them when it comes to them beating quite a few other teams.

I like Liuzzi, I don't like VM, I don't like Sutil's flaming personality. I really don't like the look of their car or its colors. I really don't find anything to celebrate there. There are other small teams I would prefer to score regularly.

I agree completely. I do like the original livery they had at the original launch with the gold, red and white, but since they scrapped that before their first race I've been very meh about them ever since. But Fisi coming in second was a memorable race.

Someone has to make up the numbers, and at least they're competitive. Without teams like FI I don't think the factory teams would last long

Few comebacks are good.

Fuck, look at Jordan (Michael, not Eddie).

MS didn't even go out on top, he went out having lost the last two years straight to Alonso, who hasn't been able to beat his competition since.

"The good thing with me and Jenson is that we clearly want to beat each other but Jenson is very smart and does not have that too aggressive flair in him and neither have I. I am really happy for him. He did a better job and I am sure that when the tables turn, as they will, it will the same for me."
