His Sunday appearance at Brooklands marked the end of a busy weekend for Hamilton, who on Saturday participated in the annual Round the Isle sailing race around the Isle of Wight off the UK's south coast. Unfortunately, his first sailing event did not end well. Hamilton's crew and their Hugo Boss craft were disqualified from an eventual eighth place following a collision with another boat.

Lewis Hamilton says he will not seek out the advice of two past British world champions.

Amid the McLaren driver's current trough, and the negative vibes in the press, Sir Jackie Stewart and Damon Hill in particular have been forthright with their views about how the 23-year-old might deal with the current low-point and return to top form.

But despite Stewart and Hill sharing four drivers' titles between them, Hamilton – very much centre stage ahead of the British Grand Prix - insists that nobody is in a position to counsel him.

"I'm in a unique position," the Briton is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. "Nobody has felt exactly the same things as I've felt. The only person I really take advice from is my dad."

Hamilton insists that he does not ignore the advice of Stewart and Hill. "Whenever I speak to Damon or Jackie I do take what they say on board, but I'm not going to go searching them out and ask how I can be world champion. I want to do it on my own. I got to where I am on my own, with my family," he said.

Hamilton this week also denied that he is at war with the media.
"I'm not criticising you," he told reporters in the run-up to this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone. "You guys have a job to do and so do I. That's why I'm always totally open with you. You were very supportive last year. You know me - I don't bullshit. You help me get my message across.”

“You help me shine as a normal person to the public. That's why these people are standing outside waiting to see me."

Meanwhile, after a poor run in Montreal and Magny Cours, McLaren Chief Executive Martin Whitmarsh has backed the Mercedes-powered team's relatively inexperienced driver line-up. "With both Lewis and Heikki, we're convinced we've got the right blend of youth and enthusiasm to tackle the challenge of winning races and challenging for the Championship," Whitmarsh stated.

Panasonic Toyota Racing joins forces with The Dark Knight at Silverstone

Thanks to a partnership between Panasonic Toyota Racing and Warner Bros. Pictures, Hollywood is coming to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix weekend to celebrate the release of the event movie of the summer: The Dark Knight.

The much-anticipated film, which releases in cinemas across the UK on 25 July, is the follow up to the 2005 action hit Batman Begins. The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who again portrays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

To mark the release of The Dark Knight, Panasonic Toyota Racing will adopt a new look at Silverstone this weekend. The Dark Knight artwork will feature on the TF108s and the overalls of Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock, as well as the team's motor home.

But The Dark Knight theme does not stop there. On show at Silverstone will be the iconic Batmobile and Bat-Pod vehicles, while some very special media events will bring the excitement of The Dark Knight to life.

The Batmobile will even take to the Silverstone track on Thursday evening for a demonstration run alongside the TF108, followed by some unique photo opportunities with the Bat-Pod and Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock.

The strong rumour in the days before the British Grand Prix is that David Coulthard will announce his retirement from Formula One this weekend at Silverstone.

The veteran of approaching 250 Grand Prix, 15 consecutive seasons and 13 wins - and at 37 the oldest active race driver - is out of contract at Red Bull at the end of the season.

With German youngster Sebastian Vettel expected to claim his seat for next year, it is now strongly speculated that Coulthard will take the opportunity of perhaps his last home race to signal the impending end of his F1 career.

He said recently about the prospect of retirement as a race driver: "When that moment comes, there you go.
That's the journey of life. You move on to the next thing.

"There are a lot worse things that can happen to you and you move on to the next challenge," Coulthard added.

guess when Rubens is leaving? by choice or being pushed out?

shocking... it's planned to rain in England...

Rain to play a part in the GP weekend?
As has been a trend for a few races now, the pre-Grand Prix weather forecast is predicting rain.

Local prognosticators for the recent Monaco, Montreal and Magny-Cours events had similar adverse forecasts, as it now emerges that a high chance of rain exists for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The first rain of the event could fall on Thursday, with a lesser chance for the opening day of practice a day later.

Saturday, however, could be a wash-out, with some forecasts envisaging up to a 100 percent chance of rain.

Heavy showers - up to a 75 percent likelihood - could also fall on Sunday, when a sell-out crowd will gather at the Northamptonshire venue.

Coulthard, Brundle & Newey no strangers to McLaren
A high-profile delegation from Red Bull Renault were odd visitors to McLaren's Woking headquarters on Wednesday.

Former McLaren employees David Coulthard, Martin Brundle and Adrian Newey, as well as their current team principal Christian Horner, were given a guided tour of the Mercedes-powered squad's factory by Martin Whitmarsh.

McLaren admitted in a media statement that the group drew 'many curious glances' from team staff as they worked.

It turns out that Coulthard, who drove for McLaren between 1996 and 2004, won the tour - and lunch for four - in a recent F1 charity auction.

"It's fantastic that he has put his hand in his own pocket to support this charity auction and it's great to see him back at Woking," Whitmarsh said.

"This afternoon showed that we still remain friends with many of our former drivers - because Martin, of course, is an ex-McLaren driver too."

That's actually really cool IMO. Shows the class and character that is DC. I've always admired his attitude even if he wasn't the greatest of drivers. But if he messes up, he'll be the 1st to apologize and he's not afraid to speak his mind. Something most drivers lack these days...

Coulthard announces retirement from F1

By Pablo Elizalde Thursday, July 3rd 2008, 13:39 GMT

David Coulthard announced on Thursday he will retire from Formula One racing at the end of the current season.

The 37-year-old Scot, who has been racing in Formula One since 1994, said he will remain as a consultant to Red Bull Racing and has not ruled out racing in other categories in the future.

"I would like to announce today my decision to retire from racing in Formula One at the end of this season," said the Scot in a statement ahead of the British Grand Prix.

"I will remain actively involved in the sport as a consultant to Red Bull Racing focusing on testing and development of the cars.

"I have an open mind as to whether or not I will compete again in the future, in some other form of motorsport, so I am definitely not hanging up my helmet," added the Red Bull driver.

Coulthard, who made his F1 racing debut at the Spanish Grand Prix in 1994, will leave the sport after over 230 races, including 13 wins.

"The decision to make this announcement at the British GP should be an obvious one for all to understand, as I have achieved two of my thirteen F1 victories at Silverstone and I am a member of the British Racing Drivers' Club, which hosts this event," added Coulthard.

"I am proud of my work at Red Bull Racing and will continue to race with the same focus until the last lap in Brazil. Thereafter I will continue to help the team develop and move towards their ultimate goal of winning races."

I like the guy - he's not as fast as he used to be but you can't doubt he still has a sharp mind and is a great person. He reminds me of one of those older generation of F1 where they were men instead of boys (like Vettel :o) :mamoru:

The full statement from David Coulthard

I would like to announce today my decision to retire from racing in Formula One at the end of this season. I will remain actively involved in the sport as a consultant to Red Bull Racing focusing on testing and development of the cars.

I have an open mind as to whether or not I will compete again in the future, in some other form of motorsport, so I am definitely not hanging up my helmet!

My decision to retire was taken earlier in the year and is based on a desire to stop while I am still competitive and enjoying the immense challenge that Grand Prix driving represents. I also have the desire to look for new challenges within the sport.

The decision to make this announcement at the British GP should be an obvious one for all to understand, as I have achieved two of my thirteen F1 victories at Silverstone and I am a member of the British Racing Drivers' Club, which hosts this event.

I am proud of my work at Red Bull Racing and will continue to race with the same focus until the last lap in Brazil. Thereafter I will continue to help the team develop and move towards their ultimate goal of winning races.

There are many people who have played a part in my career and I would like to list a few of them below;

- My parents whose energy and encouragement through my entire career has been amazing

- Dave Boyce who guided me through Karting

- David Leslie Senior and Junior for teaching me how to set up and race a car

- Sir Jackie and Paul Stewart for putting me through their "staircase of talent"

- Sir Frank Williams and Williams Renault for having the faith to promote me from test driver to race driver, which lead to my first GP victory

- Ron Dennis and the McLaren team where I spent nine seasons and achieved the majority of my success.

- Norbert Haug and Mercedes for being racers through and through

- Dietrich Mateschitz and his Red Bull Racing team for providing me with the chance to contribute to the development of a new team, while continuing to compete and add to my tally of podiums

- Christian Horner for his open and professional management style in association with Helmut Marko

- Bernie Ecclestone for providing such a strong platform for us all to develop our skills and be able to call ourselves professionals. In years to come, my future family will still be thanking him for the financial success of F1

- My management team of Martin Brundle and David Cawthorne in association with Annette Hutchinson and Iain Cunningham for providing their valued opinions

- There have been three teams but only one designer, so Adrian Newey deserves special thanks for all the champagne that I have sprayed

- And last but not least, all the media, officials, marshals, medical support, mechanics, engineers, sponsors, lawyers, accountants and back room staff that I have worked with during this period.
