Bernie: No way back for Silverstone
Monday, 07 July 2008 13:00
Bernie Ecclestone has insisted that there is no way back onto the Formula 1 calendar for Silverstone after next year, and that if the Donington Park revamp should falter, Britain will simply lose its grand prix.
Damon Hill, the president of Silverstone's owner the British Racing Drivers' Club, had suggested that Silverstone would be ready to step in if Donington had any problems with its upgrade.
But Ecclestone says this is not an option, and that Donington will be the only place where a British race will be held from 2010.
“We won’t come back (to Silverstone),†Ecclestone was quoted as saying by The Times newspaper.
“We’re in the same situation as we were before Donington came into the deal.
"I am sure they will be ready but, if not, we will sign with another country.
"There won’t be a British Grand Prix, pure and simple.â€
Donington's owners have pledged to carry on a £100 million redevelopment to bring the Leicestershire track up to F1 standards.
The work will include a new pit and paddock complex, new infrastructure outside the track and significant additions to the track layout.
But the track's joint CEO Simon Gillett admitted yesterday that not all the funding for this project was in place and that a debenture scheme would be launched shortly.

if i were in his shoes i'd say the same thing. if you start offering people a road to take should the new track not be finished on time they have less of an incentive to get their asses in gear and get it done. to me all he's saying is "you signed the deal, you will pull up your end of it. (period)"Berne is such a tool. I can't believe he's willing to kill the British Grand Prix, which is, for all intents and purposes, is the modern day home for F1 with nearly half the teams located there...

laser measuring arm, to make sure the car piece dimensions conform to FIA specs and original designs after it comes out of the autoclave, before taking it to each race weekend. basically its a 3d scanner of sorts..I don't know what this is, but I'm pretty sure that I need it.

Heidfeld relieved qualifying woes are over
By Pablo Elizalde Wednesday, July 9th 2008, 09:29 GMT
Nick Heidfeld admitted he is relieved to have solved his problems with qualifying after a breakthrough in the French Grand Prix.
The German had failed to outqualify BMW Sauber teammate Robert Kubica until the British Grand Prix last weekend, but he had already closed the gap to the Pole in Mangy-Cours, where he was less than a tenth of a second behind.
At Silverstone, Heidfeld finished just two hundreds of a second off Kubica's pace in Q2 and then outqualified him in Q3 when the Pole hit trouble.
Heidfeld admitted it has been a relief to get over the problems, and the German reckons his championship position shows his race pace has always been strong.
"Yeah, I'm relieved that the weekend, and especially qualifying went smoothly," Heidfeld told autosport.com during testing ahead of the German Grand Prix.
"Of course the race was fantastic. To be second and after some nice overtakings.
"But for me qualifying was the bigger issue, because the races were usually good anyway. I had a podium two races ago in Canada so it's not like before everything was bad.
"It was my third podium of the season. I'm fifth now in the championship, just 12 points behind the leader, which is good considering all the problems I had. To be such in a good position with a lot of problems is not too bad."
Heidfeld said his goal is obviously not to be close to Kubica, but ahead of him, although he confessed he has been pleased with his step forward.
"Obviously Robert was usually stronger in qualifying than me, and in Silverstone and Magny-Cours we already started to change something," Heidfeld added.
"In Magny-Cours I was six hundreds behind him and in Silverstone two hundreds, despite having a big oversteer moment.
"Of course it's still not my target (to be behind) but it's getting to where I can live with. I think we have made a big step forward."

What has changed? I wonder what they change in their driving style to make qualifying "work" for them. It's like a switch or something...

I'm seriously considering a bid on it, and hoping no one realizes that the team is being auctioned
