Sorry for the slightly misleading title, but thsi showdown between Mad Max and BE is heating up to look like a bout of heavy weight in the motor racing world

May 23 (GMM) Bernie Ecclestone, angry at the letter sent by Max Mosley to FIA clubs, has finally retracted all support for his beleaguered fellow F1 powerbroker.

Ecclestone is annoyed that Mosley attempted to widen the sex scandal to a "declaration of war" with the sport's commercial rights holder, which is headed by the 77-year-old F1 chief executive.

"Everybody's wrong except him," Ecclestone mocked in the Monte Carlo paddock on Thursday, according to the Daily Telegraph.

"Everybody was involved in the orgy except him. He is just lashing out at anything he can.

"If he wants me to be the enemy he should be very careful because if he makes me an enemy I could make sure that he never whips anybody again," he warned.

Ecclestone said the Mosley letter was insulting to the 222 FIA clubs because it effectively branded them as "idiots" who could not take over responsibility for the Paris based governing body.

"Normally Max is more together instead of making silly, outrageous mistakes," Bernie, whose former alliance with Mosley stretched back decades, continued.

Ecclestone also put his signature to a formal letter of reply to the clubs, vigorously denying that he wants to take over all the FIA's F1 powers.

In the letter, he moved to correct the "misunderstandings and inaccurate conclusions" that Mosley invited the club presidents to come to.

"The (commercial rights holder) does not wish to have control over the formula one regulations," Ecclestone wrote.

He also clarified that the only changes he wants to F1's agreements with the FIA are to clear up some "unintended consequences" of the original documents.

"We intend to continue our successful relationship with the FIA," Ecclestone said.

In all seriousness I can't see this instability period as a good thing for F1. For more than 60 years, they have run this thing and they still can't figure out how to run this thing smoothly?

If one thing NASCAR has right, they've been able to make it really stable...thus we've seen them growing. This instability is not healthy for fans who want to see racing.

Very true.

But you do have 2 big entities butting heads over how to run the sport...and honestly Max, leather gimp suit and all, is making a little more sense. How many privateer teams have died in the past decade? The quality of the racing has suffered, the economic environment for the teams has suffered, you have the U.S. losing it's GP, no more suzuka, Germany splitting its 2 races, adding the all-alonso GP (which will be probably be as short lived as Alonso's WDC dominance), and only adding events in the third world, not for the fans or anything, but pretty much for rich dictators as some sort of marketing scheme....and Max has the only ideas to address some of these issues.

I def think things aren't right between FOM & FIA. But I'm speaking more in general of everything compared to anything specific. I'd wish F1 would find a technical and commercial package agreement that just works so we can get on with the racing...

Part of me wonders how much of what Mad Max is saying is just to help save his dignity with the public...But knowin BE, Max has done more things to help F1 compared to Fucking BE...scary, yea?

When Warren Buffet or Bill Gates makes $, it's because they own stock in their company..and they invested wisely in petrochina or have more companies spending millions of dollars on windows, office, & exchange licenses....Bernie is just siphoning $ away from the business it seems.

I love how BE tries to sell shares of F1 even tho he never owned it. Maybe the teams should get into bed with a new promoter and fuck BE over.

I do think that expanding F1 into different regions of the world is a plus for F1 and the places it is expanding into. It is a massively expanding market, and the glitz and glamor really has an appeal for the many regions. Even the attraction to inspire young engineers to push themselves into that level of competence is good for the advancement for a country's technology sector, having more qualified/skilled labor.

I do however think that the expansion of F1 should not be at the risk of loosing traditional races. But unfortunately is comes to a point where perhaps alternating events is the only way to keep from ballooning the schedule to ridicules proportions. I think if the scheduling was done right, it really can become a much better show.

The whole issue smells like the issues of the early 1980s - Ecclestone wants to run F1. Simple as that. But what he hasn't realised all these years later is that although he's in control of the commerical aspects, he does need the rubber stamp approval of the FIA.
