Pirelli says this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix is likely to see teams choosing between three and four pitstops, as it admits that higher temperatures will result in more dramatic degradation than was seen in Melbourne.
Winter predictions of four or even five tyre stops per race did not come true in Melbourne, where only a few driver pitted three times, most stuck to two stops, and Sauber's Sergio Perez surprisingly completed the distance with just a single tyre change.
But Pirelli's motorsport boss Paul Hembery says tyre wear is set to be a bigger factor at Sepang.
"We were absolutely thrilled by our grand prix debut in Australia, but we're aware that Malaysia should be a very different proposition, with higher temperatures and increased degradation," he said.
"We said all along that we would be seeing two to three pitstops in Australia, but in Malaysia I think that figure is likely to increase to three to four."
Pirelli will also again take advantage of its dispensation to test additional tyres during Friday practice, and will give each driver two extra sets of a revised hard compound.
"We never believe in standing still at Pirelli, which is why the teams will have two extra sets of slick tyres available to them during Friday's free practice sessions for evaluation purposes," Hembery said.
"With testing not allowed during the season, this gives us a valuable opportunity to gather more data and feedback, while it also gives the teams an interesting taste of what could be coming in the future."

Felipe Massa believes it would be a mistake to allow the use of the moveable rear wing on both straights of the Sepang circuit this weekend.
Although the plan is currently believed to be for the DRS (Drag Reduction System) to be used only on the main straight, there is still no confirmation from the FIA on whether it will also be allowed on the back straight, which is longer and therefore offers a better chance of overtaking.
Massa reckons the move to allow the DRS on both straights could actually be detrimental for the show, as it would make overtaking too easy.
"With the moveable rear wing, the situation will be interesting here, because for the moment, the plan is to be allowed to use DRS during the race on the straight in front of the pits, but at Sepang, the straight that runs back the other way is actually longer," said Massa on Ferrari's website.
"It is also true that it would offer a higher chance of overtaking. So, we are waiting for the final decision from the FIA to see if we use DRS on the front straight, the back one or both.
"The right decision could make the race more interesting for drivers and the spectators too. Personally, I am not sure that allowing DRS on both straights is the best option, because I think it might actually make overtaking too easy. You have to get the right balance between helping the chances of overtaking and having almost too much passing.
"At Sepang, the two straights follow one another, so if you are quicker than the car ahead, you might not even try and pass on the first straight, preferring to get well prepared and as close as possible, before then having a simple overtaking move on the second straight."
Massa also insisted Ferrari had worked hard to be stronger in Malaysia following a disappointing start to the season.
"No one at Ferrari was satisfied with our overall performance, nor the final result of the Australian Grand Prix and much work has gone into understanding why that race did not live up to our expectations and then to plan how to move forward this weekend."

I'm surprised the back straight is long. Front straight always feels longer to me in the games, because of that dive into Turn 1.
The limited KERS and DRS sucks. Just turn 'em loose.

I just realized we don't have a 'strip formatting' button on the post editor. Will look into adding one. When I copy and paste this stuff it comes out black on the dark theme which is unreadable.

The FIA have confirmed details of where drivers can use their Drag Reduction Systems during the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Drivers will be able to activate their rear wings coming out of the final corner onto the longest straight on the track, which is over one kilometre long.
They will only be allowed to use it if they are within one second of another car at a line just over 200m before the final turn.
This diagram published by the FIA shows the location of the zones on the track (click to enlarge):

Drivers will have free use of the DRS during practice and qualifying.
