An extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) was held in Paris today. The most significant decision was the dropping of the Canadian Grand Prix from the schedule meaning that North America no longer has a Formula One race.

The revised 18-race calendar now features a traditional summer break between the Hungarian and European Grand Prix while Abu Dhabi will host its first Grand Prix right at the end of the season.

In other news, Marco Piccinini, FIA Deputy President for Sport, confirmed that he is to leave his position, one year before the end of his term, to focus on his other professional commitments.

The WMSC unanimously agreed to give the FIA President authority to negotiate with the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) the introduction of radical measures to achieve a substantial reduction of costs in the championship from 2010. Failing agreement with FOTA, the FIA will enforce the necessary measures to achieve this goal.

It was further unanimously agreed to allow Formula One teams to equalise engine performance across the field for 2009, pending the introduction of cost-saving measures from 2010.

This comes as quite a surprise to me, and absolutely sucks! Ever since I have been following F1, the Canadian Grand Prix has been the one race that is never boring or has a predictable result.

what else is on the calendar of up coming events...
Abu Dahbi in 2010? and India 2011? And they are building a Moscow circuit...

so that's 3 more tracks in the next 3-4 years that we know of... what other locations are they going to have to drop?

looks like you're not the only one stuned...

In a surprising statement issued by the organisers of the Canadian Grand Prix, it was revealed that no news of plans to axe North America's single Formula One event had reached them prior to its announcement.

The Canadian GP was removed from the 2009 calendar by the FIA's World Motor Sport Council earlier today, with no explanations given.

"The organisers of the Canadian Grand Prix have learned through the media of the Canadian Grand Prix's removal from the 2009 Formula One championship calendar," the two-paragraph French-language statement reads.

"Consequently, no comments will be issued before speaking with the interested parties, Formula One Management (FOM) and the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA)."

The news hit Montreal like a storm, provoking strong reactions among fans towards the FIA, which is accused of showing disrespect towards the long-standing event.
The race has taken place on the famous circuit Gilles-Villeneuve every year since 1987.

In an interview with Radio-Canada, Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay spoke of an important loss of 75 million dollars for the local economy, adding that he was going to contact Canadian GP promoter Normand Legault to "see what we can do."

In 2006, Legault stated that an agreement maintaining the Canadian round of the championship until 2011 had been reached with Bernie Ecclestone.

seriously... that's weak.

not even any condition for continuing with an existing agreement (i.e. fix the track surface that falls apart every year)
