"It's hard to explain, it has been ever since I started when I was six years old, I had a very clear dream and that was to become Formula 1 world champion.

"Now I've achieved that, I've put everything into it for 25 years of racing and with the help of everybody around me, with the help of fans and the help of my team and my family and friends I have managed to achieve that this year.

"So it has been an incredible experience for me that I will remember forever.

"At the same time, it has been very very tough also because the last two years losing to Lewis were extremely difficult moments for me, which fuelled my motivation in a way that I didn't even know was possible to fight back and to achieve my dream finally."

:eek4: :eek4: :eek4:

"This year was extremely tough because I put absolutely everything into it, I didn't leave a stone unturned from Austin last year really where I suffered a lot after that loss," he said, in reference to when Lewis Hamilton was crowned 2015 champion at the US GP.

"So I pushed like crazy in all directions and along with everybody who was involved, which was also my family, a lot of sacrifices.

"My wife, for example, every time I was home she understood that I needed to rest so I never did any nights, I never took care of my little daughter, I never did any difficult things.

"She was always there to support to make it as easy as possible and that's just one example of the commitment we all put into it.

"I've achieved this childhood dream and I'm not willing to do that sort of commitment again for another year and I'm not interested in coming fourth or whatever.

"I'm a fighter and I want to win. I'm not interested to do that again, I don't want to do it again.

"So I've decided to follow my heart and my heart has told me to stop there and call it a day and go onto other things."

Woke up to the same news and I'm looking at every site to make sure it's not some weird December fools joke or something.
Did not see that one coming. More time with wife and new baby?

I guess now the race is on for that seat. Wehrlein must be jumping up and down right now.

I think it's a shame. Was looking forward to Rosberg vs Hamilton next year.

Maybe those last laps this year pushed him over the edge?

I think it's 2 things...

A)  A revitalized Lewis is REALLY hard to beat.  Lewis wasn't driving 100% at the beginning of the season...and Nico took full advantage of that.  If you're not in the car doing 100%, then you deserve to lose the WDC.  Only major respect for Nico on that one for his hard work.

B)  The time  he took to work on himself this year to beat his team-mate probably took a toll at home...and I honestly think that he couldn't see himself sacrificing like that again for a 2nd year, so he bows out graciously.

I said before, I was "Meh" about Nico winning the chip...but I didn't expect him to suddenly retire either.  Now I already miss him with the though of him not being on the grid next year.

Lewis' engine boom at Malaysia was the real deciding factor, not the start of the season.  This guy agrees...

I don't think McLaren is the same force it was in years gone by. Red Bull have sort of taken over their mantle (along with Newey and sponsors)

I think McLaren building cars has really hurt their racing division these past couple of years.

I think McLaren building cars has really hurt their racing division these past couple of years.

2008: 2nd

2009: 3rd (Brawn double diffuser)

2010: 2nd

2011: 2nd

2012: 3rd

2013: 5th

2014: 5th (last season with Mercedes power)

2015: 9th (Honda powered)

2016: 6th

Development of the MP4-12C started around 2008 and was in production from 2011 onwards, and the slide of McLaren started in 2012 (with a car designed in 2011).

So there does seem to be some possible connection there.

Briatore says no Nando to Mercedes possibility. Boooo

And Mercedes seems to be backing down from their original position regarding Hamilton's tactics in the last race now that Rosberg's retired :mamoru:

Seems like they absolutely want some form of driver continuity in the middle of the huge rules change, which makes sense.
