Kimi Raikkonen said he did not want second place at the Belgian Grand Prix after crashing out on the final lap while battling for the lead with Lewis Hamilton.

The Ferrari driver had led the majority of the race, but Hamilton benefited from the rain during the final laps to close the gap and pass the Finn.

Raikkonen regained his position when Hamilton and the Ferrari driver himself nearly crashed into the spun car of Nico Rosberg, but lost it again moments later when he spun too.

The world champion then lost control of his car again and crashed against the wall.

Raikkonen admitted it was all or nothing for him.

"I was prepared to win or lose, but unfortunately I went off," Raikkonen told reporters. "I only wanted to win. I slid wide on the fast left hander, and tried to come back on the circuit but I spun.

"I needed to get points so wanted to win it or lose it but unfortunately went off. I didn't want to finish behind we would have lost points. We see what we can do."

Raikkonen made contact with Hamilton a few times while battling for position, and their clash was put under investigation by the stewards.

Hamilton jumped the final chicane when the pair made contact, and although he let Raikkonen past, the Briton kept his momentum and overtook him on the following corner.

Raikkonen did not want to comment on the incident.

"There are rules about cutting chicanes and gaining an advantage and they are looking it. So I don't have anything to say," the Finn said.

The result left Raikkonen a massive 23 points behind Hamilton in the standings with just five races left. Teammate Felipe Massa is eight behind the Briton, and it is now likely the Finn will have to play a support role.

He said, however, that he is only planning to win races.

"It is not up to me if he (Massa) wins or not," he said. "I will do the best I can do and we see what the situation is. I try to win races and we will see what happens."

Nick Heidfeld celebrated a "great" third place finish at the Belgian Grand Prix after benefiting from a tyre gamble late in the race.

The BMW Sauber decided to pit to put on intermediate tyres with two laps to go, a risky decision that paid off when heavy rain hit the Spa circuit.

Heidfeld was a lot faster than most of his rivals and, despite having lost several places during his stop, the German recovered to finish in third.

The German admitted it was a risky move.

"It was a hero or zero decision," said Heidfeld. "I was stuck behind cars for most of the race and I had to stop earlier than some of them, including Vettel and Robert (Kubica) for the second stop.

"When it started to drizzle I thought about taking a gamble and go on inters. The team asked me again, but it was a perfect call.

"When I went out and they said two laps to go, I could not see anyone in front of me. They went so slow and I overtook a couple of cars on the last lap.

"The last car I overtook going into Turn 10 blocked pretty hard. I nearly went on the grass in those wet conditions, but I stayed on track. It wasn't really clever, but I got by and it was a great race for me."

Heidfeld's race was nearly over at the start, when McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen crashed into him, making him lose several places.

The German, however, recovered well and made his way back into the points.

"I had a pretty good getaway, better than the row in front," said Heidfeld. "Alonso was a bit better. I decided to go around outside rather than inside but unfortunately Kovy drove into me and I thought I would spin.

"I thought the race was over. The steering wheel bent and I lost a lot of positions but made them back up in the first stint."

Lewis Hamilton's victory at the Belgian Grand Prix has been thrown into doubt, with news not only that stewards are probing an incident, but also that Ferrari has lodged an official protest.

Shortly after the championship leader took the chequered flag at the end of a frenetic finish to the 44-lap race at Spa Francorchamps, it emerged that FIA officials would investigate his earlier battle with Kimi Raikkonen.

While the stewards are probing the Bus Stop chicane and La Source incident, it is believed Ferrari have also taken exception to a separate element of Hamilton's racing tactics.

Someone explain to me why Hamilton was penalized. I fell asleep with 20 laps to go but I'm going to download it.

Fuck Massa. Nice to see Kimi do well though.

SuperWTF

In for McLaren Appeal. Jesus let him have the position back, and the only reason he overtook Kimi at that corner is because Kimi did that stupid shimi into the turn.

I'm going back to bed. :wtc:

I hate it when they do that. Dipshits. Makes the podium celebrations worthless.

Shoulda just been an 'official reprimand', or a fine, or both.

the only thing questionable was lewis changing direction 4 times to block kimi after eau rouge down to les combs, and that wasn't even the thing he got penalized for :wtc:
