Kinda harsh words. I'm still very new to F1 but what would it take for the newer teams to become competitive?

"All we ever want is 10 teams," he said. "Lotus is a good name. I wouldn't want to lose them. But in general this year has been a bit of a nuisance because it has cost money to keep these (struggling) teams in.

"It has cost a lot of money to pay for them to compete. The bottom line is they haven't really and truly given us value for being there.

"If suddenly these teams don't turn up at races then I don't think the crowds will get any smaller, or the TV sets will turn off, or the newspapers will stop writing, will they?"

2 years if they can sustain a good development budget like Force India. The problem is always that they're so far behind that sponsors lose interest and back out, and they barely maintain a budget to just run a car, nevermind develop it to be competitive. Unfortunately that usually ends up with the principal sponsor/financial backer deciding that they have lost enough money and pulling out altogether, until some other hopeful comes in and starts the cycle all over again.

Sure it costs a lot to get these teams on the grid but FI has shown that even small teams can grow and progress in modern F1, and they don't need to have been established in the 80s/90s in order to survive.

He makes a point - would you be sad if HRT or Virgin Racing dropped out?

Nick Wirth needs to get off his high horse and accept that using CFD alone is still not the way to go yet. Maybe some day in the future when CFD meshing and turbulence models are more representative of real world situations, but we are not there yet.

I'd like to see all 3 teams at least reach the point where they are within 2s/lap of the leaders. That way they would at least be battling for something other than 'not last'.

Even on occasion watching a Minardi in the hands of Alonso or Webber was entertaining. But these new guys are so far back that even the best up-and-coming rookie couldn't do anything worthwhile in one of them.

Oh, I'm not saying he doesn't have a point. I just think it would be better if he had a solution or incite instead of "oh well". But then again it is F1 and anyone jumping in should know this :run:

How is it costing Bernie money to keep these guys in?

Also I fully expect HRT to fold before the end of the season or be sold/leave next year.

I think to judge the new teams we need to wait till next year, especially Lotus who I think have all the pieces in place to move up the grid. Hell even with a very basic looking car they are now within ~1.5s of the established teams in quali.

I believe that Bernie foots the bill to fly all the cars around the world... after that, the teams pay for their own transports and such...
also, he probably has to pay for pit stalls and such at all the tracks...
