I'm on RB's side here because there is a defacto prohibition on catching up.

Other teams weren't limited to how many winglets or cascade elements they could change when trying to chase Newey.

Can't fault that logic.  They shouldn't have homologated engine and freezed them immediately after switching to a completely new engine formula.  It takes time for the disparity to equalize out and for people behind to catch up, as finding performance becomes exponentially more difficult.

The argument is that Merc shouldn't be penalized for doing a good job, so simple solution:  unfreeze ALL of the engines and set a date in the future where all designs must be homologated, say end 12/31/2015.

In which case what's stopping Merc from pulling away even more?

They could always take the MotoGP route with the new factory teams and ducati: haven't won a dry race in in 2+ years, have some extra testing and a less restrictive development

Nothing, but it also doesn't stop others from trying.

Of course nothing guarantees that merc won't increase the gap, but physics dictates there is a finite amount of speed, so each 0.1s becomes harder to find the closer you get to the optimal solution.

IMO rules and regs should only serve three purposes:

Monetary: make sure the costs are controlled in such a way that team operations are sustainable

Branding: to sustain the viability of F1 as a sport/entertainment

Safety: To protect the lived and safety of all people involved

If it doesn't achieve either of the above, I'm not convinced the rule is necessary. Of course, penalizing the leading teams could be claimed to improve the show as well. I guess the solution will tend towards reducing merc performance since it is prob cheaper than opening the floodgates.

I dislike that MB has the best engine and they're driving off right away from the field, but I find it ridiculous still that RB can complain about MB having an advantage.  Because at the end of it, Adrian Newey won those titles fo Red Bull and you CAN'T buy another Adrian Newey and place it in a Force India or a Williams to design your aero package, but you can buy a MB engine and have the top engine in the field.

I'd argue that RB had more of a monopoly on F1 than MB does now.

They need to shitcan the fuel flow limit and unfreeze the engine development.  They can keep the fuel limit for the race, which would let people turn up/down the car as needed...

On a plus note, MotoGP starts this weekend, and even though Marques walked away with it last year, at least he had to WORK for it, hopefully this year is more of the same and maybe Vale can make him earn it!

As a result, Sauber will pay van der Garde a substantial settlement, reported at $16 million. The money will likely come out of the sponsorship revenues that van der Garde brought to the team.
