According to several reports, Honda has put its F1 team up for sale and if the automaker doesn't find a suitor before the start of the season in March, it won't be campaigning in 2009.

An unnamed source told Reuters that Honda team bosses Ross Brawn and Nick Fry said, "They have a month to find a buyer, otherwise they are closing the team." Autocar reports that a media lunch was cancelled this week and that a staff meeting at Honda Team HQ in Brackley was called this evening and an official statement will follow tomorrow morning from Japan.

The reason for the decision is due to the current economic climate and the cost of developing a competitive car that abides by the 2009 rules. Finding someone to back the team during these tumultuous times is going to prove difficult and there's already talk that Bernie Ecclestone may step in to attempt to work out a deal to keep Honda around.

the only team to really make me excited about their prospects since i have gotten into F1 was SA :eek3:

Huge news. Going to be interesting to see how the other manufacturers fare.

Can't stand Nick Fry but major sympathies for everyone else involved in Honda F1. Gutting stuff.

SA was the underdog team i only cared about because Sato drove for them...
if Sato wasn't there, i wouldn't have cared in all honesty...

It's not like I can actively display support with their ugly ass cars the past two years :hs:

Anyways, Honda will never make it in F1 ever again if they pull out like this. A gradual pull out, yeah that's fine. But this is an itchy-trigger finger. What main F1 player (like Brawn) would ever want to work for a team that has a history of just pulling out without any prior warning. :eek:

I'm not a honda fan at all, by any stretch of the word, but i've wanted an s2k since i drove one years back... it's the only honda i've ever even thought about owning...

ProDrive was set to take McMerc customer chassis and engines. Force India is now McMerc's techincal partner, more or less closing the door on Prodrive.

Following the news that Honda have withdrawn from F1 with immediate effect, the team has tried to reassure sponsors that new owners will be found.

Honda announced on Friday morning that the team has pulled out of Formula One due to financial reasons, leaving the both personnel and sponsors hanging in the lurch.

However, the team's marketing director David Butler has written to Honda's sponsors informing them that they are taking steps to find a buyer.

"It is with regret that I am writing to inform you that at 13.30hrs Tokyo Time today (04.30hrs UK Time), Honda Motor Co. announced that they are pulling out from all Formula One activities at the end of the 2008 season," he said in a letter according to Autosport.

"We are currently evaluating the future. The management team led by CEO Nick Fry and Team Principal Ross Brawn is deeply committed to securing the team's future and we are engaged in seeking a new team owner given the high expectations we had for 2009 under new technical leadership in addition to the world class facilities and people here at Brackley. We will keep you advised of our progress."

i wonder if Honda shut down their F1 devision to get rid of Rubens... they felt so bad after his karting drive and him saying to send honda the video that they realized he was getting old and senile, so they shut down their F1 team because he couldn't handle getting a pink slip :eek3:
