Stewards clear teams' diffusers

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, March 26th 2009, 12:51 GMT

Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota have been given the go-ahead to take part in the Australian Grand Prix after the FIA stewards rejected a protest against the design of their diffusers late on Thursday night.

Following more than four hours of presentations and discussions between the stewards and the various teams involved in the dispute, the FIA issued a statement confirming that the stewards believe the cars are legal.

Ferrari, Renault and Red Bull Racing had lodged protests against their rivals because they believed the designs of their diffusers were illegal. BMW Sauber had also been due to join the protest, but their complaint was rejected on a technicality after it was not correctly submitted in time.

The teams, however, have confirmed they will appeal against the stewards' decision, which will force the matter to go to a hearing of the FIA's International Court of Appeal.

Such a meeting cannot take place until after the Malaysian Grand Prix, meaning that Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota will unofficially be racing under appeal at this weekend's race in Australia and would likely be subject to another appeal at Sepang.

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group is to become a sponsor of the Brawn GP team from this weekend's Australian Grand Prix, The Times newspaper reports.

According to the newspaper, Branson will announce a multi-million Pound deal with the Brackley-based squad tomorrow.

Virgin will become the team's only second sponsor following today's announcement of an agreement with clothing company Henri Lloyd.

Virgin had been linked with the buyout of the former Honda team earlier this year, but Branson admitted the sport needed to change before his Virgin Group got involved.

"I think there are faults that would need to be rectified before we could go into F1," Branson told the BBC.

Good to see Brawn getting 2 sponsors already. I'm sure more will join after they win a race.

as far as i can tell the difference between renault and toyota is that the rear diffuser reaches the light assembly aft of the allowable dimensions, but toyota argues its part of the structure holding the light.

for brawn, the piece that holds the light acts as the diffuser, while the actual piece connected to the diffuser basically creates a tunnel to direct airflow.

out of the 4 examples here the clearest cut 'legal' diffuser is the ferrari example, where the diffuser does not physically interact with the light mounting at all.

Thanks Kero for the explaination.

I hope this mess doesn't influence the results too much - I doubt it will though b/c that would majorly upset fans if Toyota/BrawnGp :madfawk: /Williams won, and a win got revoked. That'd be jacked. Probably enough to turn some fans away from the sport for good.

But the altered diffuser is one of the key things to determine the ability of the car behind to follow more closely and counters the whole "Hey let's put this big-assed wing up front and a little narrow double-decker wing in the back" rational, no?

With the new wings being so wide and the aero elements moved to the extreme ends, I don't think the narrow center section of the diffuser is going to have that large an impact on the front downforce of a following car. Let alone the new driver adjustable front wings.

aerodynamics is very fickle by nature. small flick-ups and even tiny pieces like gurney flaps make all of the difference so its hard to say that this small section wouldn't affect a following car significantly. obviously as we've heard from the teams, the small channel in the diffuser that takes advantage of the loophole generates enough aero advantage to warrant up to 0.5s/lap, so it most likely affects the aero in quite a significant way. how much affect it has downstream is yet to be seen IMO.

Brawn GP Official Fanboy Status Ability Imminent

Brawn GP today announced its first new commercial partnership of the 2009 season with the announcement of an agreement with British clothing manufacturer Henri Lloyd as Official Supplier of Clothing and Footwear Technology.

In addition to providing Brawn GP's team and travel clothing plus the team's official merchandise range, the Henri Lloyd brand will appear on the BGP 001 car throughout the 2009 Formula One season.

"We are delighted to welcome Henri Lloyd to Formula One and to the Brawn GP team," Team Principal Ross Brawn stated.
"The Brawn GP team has faced a race against time to complete our preparations for the first race of the season in Melbourne and we would like to thank Henri Lloyd for sharing our vision for the future of the team."

Henri Lloyd has a strong international presence including flagship stores in London, Helsinki, Sydney, Warsaw, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Kuwait, St Petersburg and Chiavari.

Germany joins Britain in facing a future without a race....

Nurburgring boss Walter Kafitz has ruled out stepping in to replace Hockenheim should the German venue drop off the 2010 Formula One calendar.

The two circuits currently annually alternate hosting a single German race, but the future of Hockenheim's loss-making event is unclear.

Hockenheim is due to return to the calendar next year, meaning that if it is unable to host the race, Germany will not be represented in Formula One for the first time.

Kafitz told the German news agency SID that the Nurburgring will be unable to fill the void because it cannot afford to host the sport every year. He said he hopes Hockenheim is able to find a solution.

"A negative outcome (for them) would weaken Germany as a location, therefore also (weaken) the Nurburgring," said Kafitz.

So that'll leave the US, Canada, France, Germany and Britain without a race. Good thing we've got two in Spain, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Malaysia.....

The winner-take-all points system hastily introduced and then hastily rescinded for this year's Formula 1 season truly has no friends outside of Bernie Ecclestone. NASCAR drivers commenting to Fox Sports on the proposed system have trashed it: Carl Edwards, playing the role of NASCAR's Felipe Massa, said, "I think if you determine your champion just based on wins, you're taking a huge gamble of having the wrong champion." That, even though Edwards would have won last season had such a points system been in place.

Jeff Burton, echoing nearly every F1 driver who stressed the value of consistency, cited NASCAR's 36-race season as a marathon. And Kevin Harvick said what almost every pundit – and Autoblog commenter – said, "the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard." But if Bernie gets his way, we can still expect to see that very idea in place for 2010.

Virgin to sponsor Brawn GP!! :greddy:

Virgin to sponsor Brawn GP

By Pablo Elizalde and Jonathan Noble Thursday, March 26th 2009, 14:56 GMT

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group is within hours of confirming its involvement in Formula 1 as a major sponsor of the Brawn GP team.

Following reports that initially appeared in The Times, AUTOSPORT has confirmed that Branson is now en route to Melbourne to confirm that he will become a backer of the Brackley-based team.

Sources say he is so keen to press ahead with the deal that he has cut short a family ski holiday to finalise the deal in person.

Brawn GP has run unbranded so far, sticking to the white, yellow and black corporate colours used in testing so far , but are now poised to unveil a major rebranding exercise.

AUTOSPORT understands that it is possible new colours could be used on the cars as early as this weekend's Australian Grand Prix, where the team are among the favourites for victory.

As The Times reported, Branson is expected to confirm his involvement in a press conference at the Albert Park track this weekend.

Virgin had been linked with the buyout of the former Honda team earlier this year, but Branson admitted the sport needed to change before his Virgin Group got involved.

"I think there are faults that would need to be rectified before we could go into F1," Branson told the BBC.
