I was going to say the same thing...
how many times has stuff fallen off a car because either someone forgot and left it there or a bolt wasn't tight enough...
we'd be having teams banned from races left and right...

in this weekends case, it could've been "oh i didn't lock the air flow hub in, it'll just spin till it breaks off car will be okay..." not "oh shit the nut isn't on, i'm not going to tell anyone"

I agree that accidents happen, and people make mistakes that's just a part of life. But there was no deliberate attempt to stop or caution Alonso that they had made a mistake so that he could pull off to the side of the track or at least try drive slower and get back into the pits. Alonso radioed in that something was wrong, and they said nothing to him. It was as if they were hoping to get away with it, and that is what the penalty is for.

Renault suspended from European GP

By Jonathan Noble Sunday, July 26th 2009, 16:39 GMT

Renault has been suspended from the European Grand Prix for the events that led to a wheel coming off Fernando Alonso's car in Hungary today.

Following a post-race discussion with the stewards, it was deemed that the team had breached the regulations enough for it to be suspended from the next event.

It means Alonso will miss his home event that takes place in Valencia next month, unless he moves to another team.

Alonso had been leading the race up until his stop, but his efforts came to nothing after his right front wheel was not fitted properly. It worked its way loose and flew off the car later that lap, ending up against the crash barriers.

A statement issued by the stewards on Sunday night said that there had been multiple breaches of the regulations by the Renault team.

Stewards talked to Renault representatives twice after the race.

The statement said that Renault "knowingly released car no. 7 from the pitstop position without one of the retaining devices for the wheel-nuts being securely in position, this being an indication that the wheel itself may not have been properly secured."

It added that Renault, "being aware of this, failed to take any action to prevent the car from leaving the pitlane....failed to inform the driver of this problem or to advise him to take appropriate action given the circumstances, even though the driver contacted the team by radio believing he had a puncture."

It said that the team's actions had compromised safety in breach of Article 3.2 of the Sporting Regulations, and in breach of Article 23.1.i had released the car from the pits before it was safe to do so.

Renault has been reminded of its right to appeal the decision.

Devil's advocate: If they ban Renault from Valencia for the wheel coming off, will they ban Brawn for the spring coming off?

I read somewhere that the reason for the ban was Renault's clear violation of the rules because they knew the wheel wasn't secured correctly and let him exit the pits - I doubt Brawn knew the diffuser/suspension had collapsed til it was too late.

But then you could look at it like this: Why didn't Barrichello stop on the circuit after he knew his car turned into the Hindenburg?

I didn't watch qualifying, but did Rubens nurse the car back in to the pits? or was he still trying to pull a fast lap spiting out parts as he drove?

With Alonso, it was pretty obvious he tried to nurse the car back into the pits, not that he had a choice. He slowed down and stayed off the racing line and so in theory he did not ignore safety. Therefore I think that's enough reason not to penalize him.

Yeah I don't think they showed Barrichello but I imagine he hobbled back to the pits.

I kind of see this Alonso thing like Webber pulling out on Kimi in the pits - how were they (the drivers) supposed to know. Slap Renault with a 5 million euro fine and be done with it, they wont be doing that shit anytime soon.
