Goin' Old-school F1 here...God among men. These guys were the epitome of true bravery piloting those flimsy, gas-filled cars around in the rain at 200mph next to houses, telephone poles, and cows. I think we tend to see accidents as being 'normal' and what not, but it wasn't too long ago that a simple crash like the one that occurs on a regular basis used to be unsurvivable at best.

no seat belts and leather helmets
i believe i read somewhere that no seat belts was actually because they would rather be thrown out of the car in a crash than be stuck in it.

I"ve read this too. And who wouldn't? I was looking at the 67 Eagle Weslake -- and the car is literally a gas-tank. They sit on top and are surrounded by gas tanks. Hell, the gear shifter went thru the gas tank! And the suspension was made of magneisum, known for acting like a match...
