Former McLaren race-winner Juan Pablo Montoya has advised world championship leader Lewis Hamilton to keep away from Ferrari's Felipe Massa on the track in this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix title decider.

Montoya, who quit McLaren and Formula One two years ago to race in NASCAR, has tipped Massa to win the race on Sunday - but firmly believes that Hamilton must steer clear of him if he's to wrap up his first drivers' championship.

"I think Felipe will probably win the race," Montoya told autosport.com. "And if I was Lewis, I wouldn't be anywhere close to him. If Felipe comes anywhere near him, I would let him by.

"Lewis has got to play this pretty smart. When you're that young and you're in Formula One, you want to win every race. That's great, but when you're points racing all of a sudden, you've got to learn that a different result can be the best one for you.

"Ahead of this weekend, I'm sure they [McLaren and Lewis] will have talked about this, and he's just got to bring the car home in the points. Then he'll be world champion."

Montoya doesn't think that last year's disaster, when Hamilton went off on the first lap and then suffered a gearbox gremlin that caused him to miss out on the title, will play on their minds too much going into Interlagos.

"Maybe it will a little bit, because they know all about what happened last year, but I don't think they'll dwell on it," he said. "McLaren have won world championships before, so I think they'll do a pretty good job in Brazil.

"I think Lewis will win it, I'll be surprise if he doesn't. He's done a good job with his career and I think he's a great guy. F1 is all about the car, so if you've got that, it's all good for you."

I'd be wary of Massa, Kimi, Alonso :madfawk:

Grand Prix suffers $40 million loss

New figures reveal that the 2008 Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne suffered a $40 million loss.New figures reveal that the 2008 Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne suffered a $40 million loss.

The 2008 Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne suffered a record $40 million loss, new figures reveal.

Taxpayers again had to prop up the struggling event to the tune of $40.1 million, the Australian Grand Prix annual report shows.

The report, tabled in the Victorian parliament on Thursday, also shows the Motorcycle Grand Prix made a loss of almost $4 million.

Revenue for the FI Grand Prix was down marginally from the 2007 event, while expenditure soared by more than $5 million.

Overall losses exceeded the previous year's deficit by more than $5 million.

Melbourne was in danger of losing the event as skyrocketing costs and sliding revenue tempted Grand Prix bosses to hunt for a more profitable host overseas.

Local organisers have since clinched a deal to run the event until 2015 under a five-year licence extension, the terms of which are confidential.

The deal is contingent on Melbourne holding a twilight event to boost television audiences overseas.

The Grand Prix attracted 108,000 people on race day this year - up by 3,000 spectators in 2007 but overall attendances hovered at only 300,000 people over the four days.

Sales revenue increased by almost six per cent to $35 million but sponsorship income slumped by more than $4 million.

Despite the losses, Victorian Premier John Brumby said the Grand Prix remained a good event for Melbourne.

"I think going forward there's a commitment from the (Grand Prix) Corporation, a commitment from the government to do everything we can to make this an even better event," he said.

"In terms of our tourism attractions and our major events the Grand Prix is a crucial part of that."

Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding said the government had always been upfront about its $40 million contribution to the Grand Prix, announced shortly after this year's event.

"What this shows is that we've always been upfront at telling the Victorian people what the cost to taxpayers of the Grand Prix is," Mr Holding told reporters.

He said the event brought millions of dollars in economic benefit to the state.

"That's why we've re-signed it until 2015.

"We recognise there is a cost to the state for holding the event, we're always up front about what that cost is."

Got my tickets for next year - hope this shit turns around

FIA condemns Hamilton abuse

Thursday, October 30th 2008, 17:48 GMT

The FIA has condemned comments from fans posted on a Spanish website launched against Lewis Hamilton's title bid.

The website, called pinchalaruedadehamilton (burst Hamilton's tyre), has gathered nearly 20,000 comments, many of them derogatory to the McLaren driver.

The governing body on Thursday condemned the comments.

"The FIA's position is very clear. Discrimination and prejudice can have no place in sport or society. Everyone in our sport will join us in condemning these abusive and hateful comments," an FIA spokesman said.

The website's domain is registered by a marketing company called Tequila Spain.

A note says the website is not responsible for the comments made on it.
